First Oil Change Questions...

Hey so i bought my Jeep Cherokee a little bit ago and im just about to do my first oil change on it. I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the 4.7 Liter (Not the HO). I just have a question about how much i need. The manual says 6 quarts or 5W-30...Is this right? Plus is there anything special i need to do when i do it? Thanks Guys!:)

That is correct, you will need six quarts of oil and a new oil filter. I personally use the oversize filter and use just about a quarter of a quart more to fill it up.

The oversize filter is what would fit a Ford 5.0, Moble One M1-301 is what I use. In Fram numbers it would be a number 8 instead of the 16. But that is for cross reference only, I do not recommend using the basic Fram filters.

Oh as for anything special, I cover the two pre-cats with foil before I drain the oil because it always seems to splash a little oil on them and then stink for days after the oil change as it burns away. When you are done just carfully pull the foil off.

Other than that, it is just a normal oil change.

Cool man I really appreciate the help! I got one more question for you tho...why do you not like the basic fram fliters? Is there something wrong with them?

I never had any problems with drain oil splashing on the pre-cats on my 2000 4.7 either.

But on the 2004 4.7HO the pre-cats are much larger and when the drain plug is pulled the first gush of oil seems to always get some on them. Then as it burns off, it stinks of burning oil for a few days. I don't know if the 2002 4.7 has the larger pre-cats or if that is just an HO engine thing.

And I agree, if six quarts are put in, and the standard filter is used, don't worry about the dipstick showing slightly over.

Yep 6qts is the right amt with a new filter. If you checked the level before running the engine, the oil filter is still empty and when it fills, it will bring the level down a tad.

You should be good to go!
