Paint Quality

Just wondering if the new paint equipment they added to the Jefferson plant enabled Jeep to produce a vehicle with less noticeable orange peel?

Mine's got some orange peel, but not the worst I've ever seen.

The finish has small nubs in it similar to the peel of an orange. Some is okay, but too much, and the light doesn't refract properly, giving a somewhat dull finish.

If you've watched any of the custom builder shows, you hear them use the term "color sanding". This is sanding the finish to remove the orange peel, bringing about a smooth as glass finish. Time consuming process.

From what I hear it is from the paint robots, since it is not color sanded between that coat and the clearcoat. Just a sacrifice that has to be made when not doing by hand.

It's a case of that final polishing that is not available to a mass production vehicle. If you saw a paint shop job, you would know what it really looks like prior to polishing. I find the paint jobs as they are delivered to be quite nice, and wonder how they are able to deliver the shine that they do considering they are applied by a robot.

May nice cars have orange peel, the only car i have seen with out it is my friends that he hand painted and wet sand the dang thing many times, but because it is being done by a robot its almost impossible to not get some orange peel
