better gas mileage with xbars off?

can this be forreal? i normally average like 18mpg on long highway trips around 70-75mph, on friday i took off my roof rack x bars, and took a trip about 220 miles to nj. i averaged almost 20mpg! and honestly i stayed above 75mph most of the way. i cant think of anything else thats changed. do u guys think removing these xbars made the difference or am i missing something

Probably more about the weather conditions than the drag of the cross bars.

i also went up by 2mpg on the highway with the bars off. it also makes for a quieter ride.

Personally, it could all be dependant on weather conditions, whether your driving in the wind, with the wind, wind to your sides.....

I doubt the crossbars make any difference at all, especially 2 mpg

Yeah I find it really hard to believe that there was that much of a drag from the crossbars on the roof. Yall had the wind at your arse is my guess.

I have heard of this. Andy did you do the gas mileage by hand? Recording the Mileage and then dividing it by how many gallons it took to fill it?
