Grinding Noise

2003 Grand Cherokee Laredo, I6, 80k miles

When I get in my Jeep, put it in reverse and start to back up, I hear a metal grinding noise (like if you let your brake pads wear out, metal on metal sound). The noise is there from the time the truck starts to move. It's present when I let my foot completely off the brake, on the brake, going straight, or turning.

Once I put the Jeep into Drive and go forwards the noise goes away. I can then stop and put it in Reverse again and the noise is gone. If I let it sit for awhile, it will be back when it's in reverse again (but only when first starting).

It just started yesterday when I was backing out of my parking spot from work. I thought it might be something stuck under the Jeep, but I didn't see anything last night. I have an idea of what it might be but would like some other opinions before I say what I think is the problem. So, what do you think the problem is?

possibly a problem in the rear brakes....wheel cylinders leaking, brakes out of adjustment, self adjuster or hardware broken...who knows? what do u think it is?

Re: Grinding Noise

I'm thinking it's possibly a U-joint. Truck has 80k miles so the mileage is about right. I think that when I let it sit, the needles in the bearing are settling to the bottom of the bearing. When I start and back up, they grind on each other a little bit. Once I go forward, the centripital force spins them out and more into the correct place. Then if I stop and back up, they haven't settled yet so they don't grind.

But at the same time, I still don't understand why it only happens in reverse and not forward. If it was brakes I would think it would be in forward and reverse.

I'm not sure if Wk still uses rear drum parking brake,it may be sticking if you use it when you park and release it just before you back up 1st. time. I wouldn't think it is U joint.

The front brakes do most of the braking when going forward. I doubt it's u joints, but that was a very interseting hypothesis

I also would look first to the parking brake shoes. Did you try to move the parking brake handle when backing of to see if the noise will become different or even disappears?

No I didn't b/c I never use my parking brake. I haven't used it since I got the Jeep, but I'll try it today.

Yesterday I did park the Jeep on a hill when I got home. I got in today, put the TC in Neutral, and let it roll backwards down the hill. It still made the noise. So I know it's not the tranny. :)

Fixed my problem. Turns out the squeeler pad on the front passenger brake was causing the noise. Replaced all 4 brake pads (I always replace all 4 when fronts are bad) and everything is good.

Take a look at the parking shoes BEHIND the rotors. They have a tendancy to separate from the shoeplate with age.
