Transfer case problems????

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee with 4.7L v8 and i think the transfer case is going bad. It used to just happen when it was cold but over last year it does it all the time now. When i go to turn left or right i hear a rubbing like sound and it almost feels like something is binding up. It almost feels like it is hopping when i turn it. I think it may be the transfer case but i wanted to get some input from you guys. Any information is appreciated. Thanks

Re: Transfer case problems????

that doesnt sound like the transfer case is it coming from the rear or front ??? could be your front axle if its associated with turning

Re: Transfer case problems????

yeh, sounds more as low oil level or not using of the limited slip additive in the vari-lok or trac-lok differentials.

Definately not coming from rear. Feels as if it is coming from middle to front of jeep. Diff fluid changed in both front and rear with limited slip additive every 30k and fluid levels for diff are good.

Re: Transfer case problems????

just curious have you checked the transfer case fluid as well? or the bolts on the driveshafts ??? or the links on the front axle ? it can be a number of things

Re: Transfer case problems????

Sounds to me like it's stuck in 4wd. I don't know how these Jeeps work, but on my old Ranger I had to replace the solenoid b/c it was stuck. But that had a selector knob and not a selector stick.

Re: Transfer case problems????

When you have the NV 247 T-case, there is a progresive coupling in it. It senses the speed difference between the front and rear axles and can transfer the force from the rear axle partly to the front.

Re: Transfer case problems????

All fluid levels are good including tranfer case. My jeep is a limited 4.7 L and is all-time 4 wheel drive so it cant be shifted out of 4wd. Checked torque on all bolts in driveline. Any other suggestions? Thanks

And when you say links on front axle what are you talking about?

Re: Transfer case problems????

Mine is doing the same thing , have changed all the fluids, saw the most difference after changing fluid in transfer case, my Jeep is a 01 Grand Cherokee LTD. V8. Am considering changing the transfer case , have driven it about 250 miles since I changed , its better but not completely cured.

Re: Transfer case problems????

Most probably the progressive coupling inside the T-case which got stuck. Eventhough with the 247 T-case the jeep is called full time 4x4, its in fact not, but it will transfer torque to the front wheels in case of a difference in speed between front and rear propeller shafts.
