Stuck in 3rd

Hi.

My '05 Hemi has 130 000km on the clock, with no major problems up to now. Yesterday while driving home it suddenly shifted from D to 3 and remained there no matter what I did. I was told to check the ATF level, which I did and topped it up slightly. It helped for about 30km, but now its stuck in 3rd again. Has anybody experienced this and how do I fix this? I am really worried as Jeep parts are VERY expensive in South Africa!!!

Any codes? Could be as simple as an output/input speed sensor. Common failure item on the 545RFE.

Hopefully you "topped it up" the proper Chrysler ATF4? Very important.

Is your fluid burnt? I would smell it to see if it is.

you might need to replace your shifter....the same thing happened to me, and that fixed it...good luck!

The colour of the oil seemed ok and I couldn't smell anything strange.

Codes, where do I check for these?

Turn the ign on-off, on-off, on - the info screen will show codes. Have pad and pencil handy.

A few things:
1. The trouble codes are the first place to go. They will point you in the right direction.
2. Has the trans. fluid/filters ever been changed? There is a TSB on the return filter. I would recommend that be done, in any case, if it has never been changed. Be sure to use the correct fluid.
3. The pressure switch (solenoid) pack in the trans. has been an issue on some of the 545RFE transmissions. These solenoids are in the trans. above the valve body. I understand the solenoid pack (in the U.S.) runs about $200-300. Labor to install puts the total job up around $1000. If you're handy you could do both at the same time. These solenoids are continually monitored by the TCM for correct state in each gear. If they are malfunctioning, you'll most certainly get DTC. The solenoid positions in 3rd gear are: L/R-Open; 2C-Open; 4C-Open; UD-Closed; OD-Closed.

Re: Stuck in 3rd

I had the car at the local Jeep dealer today, they replaced all filters and fluids while also giving it a major service costing me R6700 ($1000). To my great shock it is still stuck in 3rd and the mechanic tells me it is because I have oversize tyres fitted. I replaced the stock tyres with 265/70/17 more than 2000km ago, why would it now suddenly give this problem? Surely mine is not the only hemi with this size tyres, did anybody else experience similar problems or is the mechanic talkin shit?

this is a long shot but try it and see if it works ... buy a can of di-electric cleaner that evaporates ... usually found at any auto store for real cheap $5.00 then disconnect all the wires going into PCM and the big harness behind the fuse box that's out in the open. Spray it liberally and make sure you dry it over night ... plug it back in and see if it works ... also spray the pcm contacts and the pcm pins themselves with it

I had similar limp mode problem and that worked for me, it's an easy try

Good call, boniomario. Definitely worth a try. Electrical gremlins are tricky and sneaky. I would be shocked and amazed if the tire size has anything to do with it. As long as all your tires are the same diameter, it shouldn't matter at all. I still think its a TCM programming or control solenoid problem....leaning more toward the solenoids. Did the mechanic check for any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)? With this problem there would amost certainly be a DTC. Have you (since they serviced it) checked the transmission fluid level when hot?

Its NOT your tire size. The same dickhead dealer told you your "Service Elec Brake" warning was your tires too!
The dealer needs a slap.
