Why no Quadra-Drive II on a V6?

Does anyone know why you can only get Quadra-Drive II (with ELSD) only if you upgrade to the HEMI? Is the V6 not powerful enough? Is it just a lame marketing thing to get people to buy the more expensive HEMI? ...or are there actually technical reasons why this just isn't even possible with the V6?

The V8 uses stouter axle sizes, so perhaps they didn't want to develop two different diffs with LSDs to accomodate both choices.

I agree... Lame. Would have purchased with the V6.

Re: Why no Quadra-Drive II on a V6?

I don't think the lack of Quadra-Drive II with the V6 is due to technical reasons, but rather due to production problems.

Here is my reasoning:
1. Quadra-Drive II was offered as a stand-alone option pick for for Overland V6 model on the Jeep.ca web site back in June for several weeks, before it was taken out in early July. Sounds too long to have been just a web site error.
2. My local dealer was certain that the V6 Overland could be ordered with Quadra-Drive II (either as a stand alone option or with the ORGII package) in early July, according to his info. Unfortunately, at the time I wanted to hold for the Limited V6 with Quadra-Drive II, which was hoped to be offered 'soon.' So far no dice.
3. According to Milous and other posters to this site, the WK2 production at JNAP is running about 800 per day on average, with 70% choosing the V6. That means they need 560 V6 engines per day to meet demand.
4. But, according to posters on this site also, the Trenton plant is making about 400 Pentastars per day. Given that there were also early production problems back in April/May in Trenton, the Pentastars must be in constrained supply.
5. Adding to the problem, the Pentastar is supposed to be featured in other new models this fall (why did it not appear in the new Wrangler?). The shortage will only get worse until Trenton and, later, Mexican production ramp up.

So, I believe that Chrysler is restricting several enticing option groups for sale only with the Hemi V8 for now. Hopefully, since I do not tow, want the better fuel economy and have heavy snow and a long lane to deal with, I will be able to buy a Quadra-Drive II with V6 sometime later on.

Meantime, we wait. Milous, any comments?

** bump ** What about it Milous?
Any chance for QDII with the V6 sometime later in the model year? Thanks.

Re: Why no Quadra-Drive II on a V6?

Well this question came up twice in the Sept. 8 chat with Jeep Engineers, and they pretty well put the question to rest (for now at least).

See answers #42 and #67 of the chat (hopefully these numbers will not change). To paraphrase their answers about whether QDII and V6 would be offered together:

JeepEngineer1: Not offered due to "Durability of driveline."

JeepEngineer2: "Not currently in the plan."

So at least I can stop dreaming. Better to know the truth, even if bitter.

I'd like to hear them explain the durability thing..... The engine must be the weakest link because there's no way that satanic pentastar motor could work the QD more than the hemi.

Yeah, when i read the "durablity of driveline" i wondered the same... Durability of what?
Unfortunately no further explanation was forthcoming. Maybe next time we can ask one of them to expand on that for us? :)

I got the impression that JeepEngineer1/2/3 really meant... poli sci intern 1/2/3.

400/day, who said that? The correct number is >700/day.

Milous:

The 400 Pentastars per day figure came from the August 25 post from Marlon JB2 (Post No. 29 in the thread "Hell, It's easy to build an Overland").

But I am happy to hear that production is better than that. 700 per day would meet the demand for the WK2 at least.

Thanks for the update.
