Considering purchasing GC 2011- need opinions.
I used to own 1998 GC Ltd 4x4 with 8-cyl engine (bought it used in 2000) until past Sunday when it was totaled in an accident (rear-ended).

I've been mostly satisfied with it except one thing: noise and vibration from the rear on the highway at speeds over 50mph (I didn't mind at all that it was bumpy at times on uneven pavement). Visit to dealer brought an answer "this is a Jeep, they are all like that". Considering I don't drive much I just got used to it b/c it wasn't horrible and I understood that at that time Jeep didn't have to compete on quiet ride quality.

Now I am forced to search for new car and checked out GC 2011 at the dealership but didn't drive it yet.

I am considering GC 4WD with V6 and 26X package. No other options. I don't really plan to off-road or tow anything.

1) For those who owns one or test-drove one: how is the ride quality on the highway at >50MPH? How does it compare with, say, Toyota Highlander or Mazda CX-9 or similar competitors?

2) I am somewhat reluctant to purchase model of 1-st year design. If anybody purchased first year model (93, 99, 2005) - were there any bugs that were never fixed by Chrysler for that year model yet were fixed at later years?

I owned a 2005 jgc Laredo x package. Was a fluke purchase but have been very happy with it. Like you also did not like the noise from the rear over 50 but have learned to live with it. I did purchase it at the model change and swore I would never do that again chrysLer was very good about fixing things but I actually never had any problems with it or recalls. Have 50k milled on a 2005 and not one thing ever wrong been great vehicle. I did test drive the 2011 models. There is no way you could imagine e difference, the 2011 is like driving a lexus or a Benz no competition with the Toyota and the Mazda. It's a different level of feel, extremely quiet and smooth ride and independent suspension so you don't get the head toss on uneven roads I've become so accustom to a lll and all I think it's a great remodel. I have an overland model on order, very pricey but I was going for the Lexus 350 but hated the look so love the look of the overland and has many more comfort features and beter ride for a few K less. Ho test drive one it will be worth your time.

The toyota highlander the series and the mazda cx-9 aren't really competitors for the grand cherokee. Instead, compare the GC to the Land Rover LR-4, Toyota 4Runner, and Nissan Pathfinder. For head-to-head comparisons versus the LR-4 and 4Runner, look in the "reviews" sticky thread on this forum. Don't buy a pathfinder. I don't need to qualify that statement.

I agree with the above. I have test driven the V6 and V8 laredo and limited.

Jeep, if not all manufacturers, will remedy any problems that come up for first year models. It may take some time, but they've been very good about making good on any flaws. Sometimes though, you need to make yourself available to a site like this one to find out what TSBs are describing for certain fixes. Not every fix is a recall status item, and some engineering changes take place years later. 2002 for the brakes on a WJ as an example.

I've driven both the V6 and the Hemi in Overland and limited trim. I have a 2000WJ Laredo that is loaded with the 4.7 and the new jeep is miles ahead in refinement over mine and especially over the previous WK.

My girlfriend drives an X5 and seriously considered a new GC. While the X5, Land Rover may beat it in some areas, you can now actually mention the GC as an option to those two vehicles with a straight face in my opinion. I will say that the new X5 with the twin turbo and 8 speed transmission is a sweet ride and outclasses the new GC in that department. But it also costs 15-25K more.

I am also leery of new models as they first come out, but it seems this Jeep is well designed and the quality control is spot on.
