Considering buying a Wrangler Unlimited

Hey guys/girls,

I've been a Jeep driver since I was 16, sticking to the Cherokee/Grand Cherokee line due to needed cargo space. Now that the 4 door JKs have come along I've been heavily considering selling my '04 Grand Cherokee and buying a ~'09 Wranger Unlimited. My biggest concern has to do with the new v6 their using now. My '04 WJ has the i6 4.0L which we all know is an extremely reliable 190hp. From what I've read about the new v6 its putting out 202hp and claiming 19mpg highway.. this doesn't seem like an improvement from my i6 which typically pulls 21mpg highway (cruise set and conservative). At any rate, what are all of your feelings about the 4 door body, transmission, newer v6 3.8L 202hp engine they're using now. I am still not sure if I really want to give up the stable i6 for what could be a problematic v6/trans combo. Also, if any of you have any other information on the Wrangler Unlimited, such as best year to consider buying, feel free to let me know.

Thanks,
Jester

The 3.8 is comparable to the 4.0...the design is nearly as old. If you are buying new wait till 2012...new interior for 2011, but new engine (the modern 3.6 from the gc) in 2012.

I myself really want one but am willing to wait till 2012.

The 3.8 is nothing like 4.0 it basicly sucks, and the 3.6 is not suppost to be much better the new motors just dont have the low end torque.

Re: Considering buying a Wrangler Unlimited

Um the 3.6 produces more torque at only slightly higher RPMs. Its a small tradeoff I will gladly make. Onroad response and economy will be improved. They've never really put anything I would consider a good motor into a Jeep anyway so its all a matter of what doesn't suck as bad. Anyway I would be suprised if the 3.6 isn't retuned for use in the wrangler. Just tinkering with the VVT ought to allow more low end torque.

Anyway as far as reliability is concerned the auto trans has a tendency to overheat in heavy offroad usage, this can be remedied easily with an aftermarket trans cooler if you are planning to do any hardcore offroading, or will tow in a warm climate.

i think the new JK is ugly as sin and their new mini van motor is an ugly brother to the old I6. Ive built many many many wranglers and wrangler based buggies and the new JK just isnt what the jeep used to be. there are 4 door pre JK wranglers out there. they float around on ebay frequently just keep a look out.

I'm the opposite I thought the old I6 was crap and now when I see a TJ they look kinda dated. Not that the new 6 is a lot better, but that oil leaking iron block I6 packed poorly, made no power, and returned horrendous fuel economy. For some reason Jeep people still mourn its death.

Jester - I owned an 08 4 door Sahara. I lifted it 2 inches. Added a Volant cold air intake as well as a Vortex piece to add air power?! Gibson exhaust. 33" Yokohama Geolanders.... Jeep was a DOG no matter what we tried to do with it. Added a program by Hypertech and the PGM fried so it had to be towed in to the dealer and replaced. Loved the lifted height, loved the local 30 mph driving but that was all. Took it on our major highway up north and was not comfortable with high speeds at all. Built well, built solidly and I LOVED it but it was a DOG. Sold it and bought a '93 cheapy that I am fixing up for fun.

Basically if you go any larger than stock on the tires you have to re-gear.

Congrats. I've been really considering one too lately...since I've kinda fallen out of love with the WK2

What is your definition of a good motor?

I loved my 4.0. You can beat the living piss out of it and it still ask for more. With that being said, the 3.8L has been in the game for a very long time and I wouldn't mind owning it. In fact, I would have picked the Wrangler 2 door over the Liberty if it wasn't for the fact that the Liberty can tow a lot more.
