tappet sounding noise

i had my jeep serviced yesterday, and all seemed fine, driving it today i have noticed a tapping noise coming from the engine bay.

it was def not there before the service. it only seems to happen when the car is idle, when i gun the engine it either dies down, or is drowned out by the engine sound.

anyone got clues?

passeneger or drivers side? warm or cold?

could be the injectros firing.......

there is a tsb at wkjeeps...depending on which side of the engine you hear it coming from

Not sure if it's doing when cold but when I first heard it the car was warm. As regards to it coming from the left or right to me it sounds like it is coming directly from the engine bay itself or possibly even from underneath the car. Where ever the sound is cing from it sounds sick, and slightly worked because the service centre is closed until monday

also doing it when the car was cold.........

thanks for your help Scott, will keep you updated.

Do you know who got access to the TSB`s? if you cant post it openly, thats fine.

Just thinking about this now, when i change the engine oil next year will this happen again? Have to say its a pretty shitty fault, changing engine oil causes a rattle\knock sound.

there is a process to changing the oil on the diesel. If they dont follow it exactly it can cause tapping with the hydrolic tappets

I am at the jeep service centre been here since 9am and its now almost 1pm. At first they said the sound went away, yeah right, so I showed and let them listen to it again, they removed the belt and hey presto sound went away, but to my surprise they didn't follow the bulletin and wanted to work on the pulley system, so i showed them the tsb. They didn't seem impressed by this, and then said oh I know about this issue.

Still waiting for my next update.

Scott what steps should they follow? The ones on that bulletin for an oil change?

I had the 99 4.7....Not the same motor, but I noticed a tapping from my purge valve....drivers side engine bay. you may only hear it at idle.....before I put an ear to it, I thought it was a rod lol

Scott if you can find the process documented somewhere you are a legend. After hours of "diagnostics" they agreed to take the route of the service bulletin.

But i stand to lose out on 200 plus green backs for the time taken to diagnose the fault, even though i had to point it out to them. I questiond the techs not picking up on the sound after the oil change and so called "testing"

I plan to contact the UK MD of Jeep to raise this, no way I am paying 200 something to fix an issue which can arise when the oil is changed, its simply outrageous.

So anything you can find will aid me in case against these jokers. I love my Jeep but this is leaving a bitter taste in my mouth.
