8-Speed Box Before Long?

Today's Detroit News reports:
Marchionne and his team announced that the revamped Chrysler Sebring sedan and convertible have been renamed the Chrysler 200, and confirmed that the 2011 Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger are getting 8-speed automatic transmissions; 9-speeds are in the works.

If the 8-speed box will be in Chrysler 2011 models, it would seem that the Jeep GC should be comparably equipped in short order unless Jeep just doesn't give a damn.

I believe they would have to recertify the Grand via the EPA, and it's not just a simple thing as adding the new trans to the mix.

I wouldn't be shocked if it doesn't appear till the mid-cycle refresh 2013ish. It would be nice but I don't find the 5er to be a deal breaking considering the capability. Those who whine over fuel economy are in the wrong place anyway, even if they don't know it.

The fuel economy isn't even that bad. Sure, the engineers say it might be a 10-20% or so improvement with an 8 speed (I'd bet closer to 10%), but that's only 2-3mpg at best. Compare the Grand Cherokee to other SUVs, and it's really not significantly worse. You aren't going to notice a 1-2mpg difference, and the Ford Edge doesn't even get 20mpg in town (and it is nowhere near as capable).

3 MPG with 25 gallon tank is can extra 75 miles... with the current gas prices i would say that's significant.

Agreed, the current V6 average MPG city/HWY would push 20-25 mpg mark and the city would be right near 20 probably?? Thats if it was a 3 MPG increase.

Gets it out of the "teens"

I own a 2009 Infiniti G37 Sedan and I can tell you that the 2008 models had a 5-speed auto and the 2009 models saw the addition of the 7-spd which is what I have. The combined fuel economy increase was only 1mpg by adding two speeds so I would say adding 3 speeds going from a 5 to a a 8 spd will most likely net 2mpg increase so I think that's a good reference point. Every little bit helps but it would be interesting to see the MSRP difference with the 8spd because it will assuredly be higher so there's a break-even analysis you'd have to do depending on your driving habits in terms of miles etc. to see when you'd start "saving" money. Just my $0.02.

These rumors are keeping me from pulling the trigger on a new WK2. I don't want to buy now and kick myself when the 2012 has increase power and efficiency. I test drove the V6 and felt it needed a little boost to feel right.

Eventually there will be an 8 speed transmission, fiat Multiair, direct-injection and a turboocharger for the pentastar v6. All will increase power and/or fuel economy.

Waiting for technology advances before you buy means you are going to wait forever though so I'll probably go for a new 2011. I bet there wont be any changes before the 2014 model year anyway and I can't wait that long.

I won't wait for the 8 speed for fuel economy reasons, I'll wait because I truly believe the WKII deserves a better box of gears than what it's saddled with now.
