Removing painted pinstripes

Unfortunately the dealer I bought my WK from thought it was a good idea to put pinstripes on the Jeep. I hate pinstripes. I have a silver Jeep with black pinstripes. It does appear to be on top of the clear coat which from what I have read, is a good thing.

Has anyone successfully been able to remove painted pinstripes without affecting the paint?

I have seen people using extra strength Easy Off oven cleaner, a dremel with a medium cutting polish, and others say just leave it to the pros at a body shop.

I don't have a problem doing it myself (I actual prefer it and could save some cash) but would take it to a pro if that is the only safe way to have it done.

Thoughts?

Re: Removing painted pinstripes

I paid my local detailer $80 to remove the painted pinstripes and wax/buff my 94 Formula. He said he used a smart eraser similar to the 3M rubber eraser wheel and took him a few hours to get it all off. It was well worth the money to have someone else do mine as it was a black car and I had no idea what I was doing. The rubber wheel did the trick, but I'd check to see how much someone local would charge you.

Good luck,

Thanks for the idea. I'll see what I can find.

just pull'em. having a 3M adhesive remover helps, but you'll want a wax/protectant to add after you do so, so it isn't nekkid afterwards. Cleaned up the look remarkably.

The 3M eraser wheel is a great tool. Pin stripes, decals, you name it. Wont harm the paint or clear coat at all. I've used it to clean excess silicone too.

Unfortunately they are painted on so I am not able to simply pull them off.

Where can I find this 3M eraser wheel at? Local auto part store?

are you positive they are painted on. I thought mine were painted too and found out it was sticker. The stickers look like paint. take a hair dryer to an end and warm it up a little, push a little corner up and pull it. I doubt a jeep has painted on pin strips

Im also positive. There isn't a distinctive line felt when running your finger over them. they do look a little different though, not like they were hand painted, more like digitally done. That probably makes no sense but I'll double check to be sure that they aren't stickers.

There is part of the pinstripe where it says JEEP in it and that is a stickers, but not sure about the rest.

Mine came with painted on pinstripes to, this is the way i did it and no problems at all! Just with using "easy off" think it took me about 4-5 hours to do both sides because you only want to do a small area at a time but you would never know they were there!

Very nice Ben. Did you have to go back and refinish the area afterwards (with cutters and such) or just go over it with some wax?

Definitely looks better!

I just used some polish then wax after that and it came out fine.

looks 100 times better without the stripes!

Re: Removing painted pinstripes

Gotcha. I started in a little area on the back panel and I quickly found out that this is going to be a time consuming prices. I only got like 2" removed after 45 mins. I must have some stubborn stripes.
