8-speed transmission

I have a couple of questions regarding the future 8 (or 9) speed transmission.

1. Will this likely be added to the 2011 as a mid-year update, or will it wait for the 2012 model?

2. Will the 2011 Durango include this?

3. What impact would you expect on mileage (with the hemi)?

There is always new and better technology on the horizon - it is tough to know when to pull the trigger.

There's a couple page thread on this topic but to quickly answer 1 and 2, no body knows it's possible for 12 not so much 11. To answer 3 it would roughly be a 2 to 3 mpg increase on the generous side.

Here's the other thread to read too.

Let's even develop this one further: at what mileage would this generate a payback for the increased cost of such a trans??? It was suggested in the other thread that this could mean a bump of $750 or more. So, getting 20mpg vs 18mpg...bragging rights at the country club???

Lets say a 24 gallon tank, thats an additional 48 miles per tank. Lets put gas at 2.80 a gallon for regular. 2.40 x 2.80= $6.72 per fill up savings

Take $750/6.72= 111.6 times you have to fill up to break even on the cost, if its $750 dollars.

Lets put the average miles driven at 12,000 a year
480 miles to the tank (20x24)

You use roughly 25 full tanks in a years time frame.

It would take you 4.46 years to breakeven on the extra cost of the tranny.

Obviously its not a cost saver else you plan to have the Jeep for 20 years then you will save money in the long run, its more or less to improve shift points/acceleration. :D

Quick math on your part, but you forgot the "loss of use" factor on that $750! ;) Yes, I would consider it a driving bonus rather than an economy bonus.
