89 YJ transmission
Posting this for a friend, he has a 1989 YJ and it shakes really bad when he takes off from a stop. we think it is the pilot bearing and plan to replace the whole clutch assembly. I need to know what kind of transmission the 89 YJ has so he can buy the right clutch kit. it is a 4.2L I6 engine. Thanks for any help

Re: 89 YJ transmission
I'm the frienx this thread is for. And i know It could be any one of three transmissions. The AX-15 if other Jeep was made in the late part of 89. Or if it was made in the early part the transmission could be the AX-5 or the BA-10/5. If anyone knows where to find the manufacturing date that would tell me. Or if anyone knows if the same clutch kit would work for all of the possible transmissions that would really help

Re: 89 YJ transmission
If you look on the top passanger side fin of the case near where the transfercase mates up there is a "sticker" with eight digits on it. That number can be looked up online at and you will know exactly which one it is.

If the trans is still in a small mirror and light will get you a look at the top side. For example my "sticker" reads: 53006176 = AX5 89-93 5 speed

They also list a bearing kit number, input shaft number, cluster gear number, and a link to a parts list.

Quadratec also has an identification section:
