What all is needed for NAV conversion?

I have an alpine HU right now, and got the kit and harness and all that good stuff from crutchfield last year. I did the install myself and all is well..

I am now thinking of upgrading to either a stock NAV unit, or an aftermarket one from somewhere, still looking at all the choices and features. It would HAVE to have ipod compatibility!

My question is, what all is needed and where can it be found?

I know I need the unit itself, stock or aftermarket is still undecided. What are some units you guys are using and how much were they?

I also need a stock radio bezel with the double din size opening? I looked on ebay and found nothing like it.

If I came across a stock unit, would that be just plug and play with the right harness, or is there more to it then that?

And I know if I go aftermarket then a dash kit and harness would also be needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated guys!

I got the stock REC nav unit with antenna and and older disc for $450 shipped on LXforums.com, then I also had to buy the bezel while I got for $70 on ebay, and also a updated disc that has the in-motion hack for $15 on ebay.

It was 100% plug and play.

For ipod connectivity you could get the chrysler iPod kit.. I think it is around $150 IIRC.

So your saying the 300, magnum, etc on that site use the same REC nav unit?

I kind of wouldn't mind getting an aftermarket unit....

The Jeep REC units have a mute button on them, Some others, like the one in my Dad's Aspen hava I think a clock button instead. I dont think it would make a difference though

Chris, I'd go aftermarket if I was you; specifically Kenwood. Since you are running an aftermarket stereo you'll make good use of the extra audio settings and if you plan on using the Nav often you'll like NAVTEQ/Garmin based mapping/interface... Garmin > everyone else when it comes to GUI and mapping technology. Kenwood is the only manufacturer who can offer the Garmin-based navigation.

Ah nice, I had no clue the in dash nav's were that cheap now a days! These will fit into the stock nav bezel without any modifications to the bezel itself correct? Im sure I will need some kind of dash kit though, metra maybe?

Double din aftermarket units will not fit into the stock nav bezel. You have to get an install kit, which is available from cruthfield for like $20 I think.

Yes, they require a little trim piece to make it flush. Like you said Metra or any of the other install brands will have this for ~ $20.
