Why you should remove bird crap from your paint ASAP!

The pics below are of my 01' WJ with over 190k miles on the odometer. Thing was the wife's daily driver, she beat it to hell and back and I never really took much care of it. Figured if she didn't care if it had bird crap all over it, why should I? :D

I was bored yesteday and decided to see just how much of an improvement I could make on the Jeep with a little invested time. The first pic shows one of at least 3 major bird bombs on the hood after the Jeep was washed and clayed. The 2nd pic is from after going over the hood pretty hard with Meguiar's ultimate compound and an LC flat orange pad. Actually looks worse afterward, as I guess some of the other paint damage that was removed was hiding more than I thought. Ain't no way to fix this other than a total repainting of the hood. Not that I would want to do it on such a beater but it sure would suck if this was one of my vehicle that I do give a crap about! :D

Wow! I knew it could damage paint, but damn. Years ago, I tried cleaning bird crap off a car and not knowing any better, did it with a dry cloth. Scratched the shit out of the paint:eek:

I've gotten into the habit of keeping a bottle of QD in the Jeep as well

I don't think birds actually consciously eat stones to regulate their bowels Irf. It just so happens there's stones stuck to the things they eat and it just so happens to help improve their digestive system. I'd bet my jeep no bird has ever thought or said "Hmmm My stomach isn't feeling well, let me eat some stones" LOL :slapfight::lol:

Actually, many birds do indeed intentionally eat "grit" as it is necessary for the crushing of food in their gizzard or crop. Hey what can I say, I spent a lot of time studying fish, birds and mammals in college.

Also, not ever pile of bird crap will do what you see in the pics above. Some will just edge the surface of the clearcoat and that sort of damage may be correctable with the right combos of pads and polish. Then there are those bird bombs that not only etch the clearcoat but somehow also get to the actual base coat of paint and cause it to physically move and or wrinkle. From what I've been told, that is what you see in the pics above. Any attempt to correct the damage will result in reaching the actual base coat of paint which would be worse than just leaving it go after a good buffing with a mild compound.
