My guess would be the heater core.

uh oh.. yea that sounds like the core, mine went out this winter, didnt really smell it but it would fog the shit out of the windows and it would be undrivable,

check on the passenger side foot well, peel the carpet back a little at the top, is it green (or red or whatever color your coolant is)?? and is it wet? if it is then its gotta bee the core

you could go to the dealer and get the AC recharged.

i had me heater core bypassed, winters in vegas arnt so bad, but NY is different. you can put it off for the summer and do a bypass but in the colder months your gonna want the heat. dealer charges a shit ton of coin to get it done, think in the $1000 range. your can do it yourself but it is SUPER time consuming and involved... heres a sample of what it takes.. Yes, similar to the above post, here's a snapshot of when I did the blend doors (same procedure of dash removal because all of the HVAC stuff is contained in one central housing) on my '04 Limited:

The first time you attempt this procedure, it will take you on average 8-10 hours to remove and replace the dash (not that it's complicated but because there are lots of trim panels and screws that need to come out).

I just bought a 2000 WJ and it has a similar smell when the heater is running--thought it was just a result of the detailing done by the dealership (carpet cleaners and such), but I guess it might be the heater core issue. Going to look for any leaks tonight.
