New x3 prices announced.... what a joke!!

So being as I currently drive an X3 I occasionally peruse the bimmerfest forum. I just saw that they have announced the price lists for the NEW 2011 X3. What a joke! In order to get the same options as a loaded Limited or Overland you will have to spend close to 58k and that is NOT including tax and title. Is somebody kidding me?? Don't get me wrong it is a great car. Drives really well etc, blah, blah, blah. But that is ridiculous considering you can get everything you could ever want in a vehicle for around 42k-44k with the Limited or Overland.

Side note... there is a thread over there titled X3 or Grand Cherokee:lol: I think we all know how that will turn out. :D

Yet another reason that I will be ordering the Overland in about a month.

The luxury brands all have significantly higher prices than a similarly equipped Grand Cherokee. Compare a Lexus RX to a GC Overland- you're at 47K and climbing fast just to match the stock Overland.

Maintenance and other costs will also be higher with the luxury brand. The only area where the premium brands might catch up are in resale value/lease residuals.

Depends on what you are using it for. BMW is not known as the "Ultimate Driving Machine" for nothing. As having a 2001 X5 as my daily driver (just rolled 200K miles), I can say there are many curves that I can take pretty aggressively in the X5 that I would never consider doing in the GC. The thing just handles like a dream.

But as stated, you get a lot of features with the GC for a lot less money. And I will be the first to agree maintenance costs are night and day. I couldn't get out of the BMW shop for less than $100 - anything major on the BMW you just figure $1K in cost. Sure is nice rolling out of the shop in the GC after paying $22 for an oil change!!

As much as I love my X5, I couldn't justify buying another - thus the GC was purchased because I needed something that could tow a decent amount of weight, but wife didn't think a truck was "practical". So the X5 is my daily driver until it requires another major repair. Then I make the decision of repairing it or dumping it and taking over the GC.

Yes and no. BMW includes free maintenance for the first 4 years. After that, it certainly is much more expensive.

Supposed to be a little larger than current X3 - in fact, they are saying it is pretty close in size to my model (1st gen) X5.

Regardless of pricing, and having looked at X3s, Q5s and some other vehicles that are not even worth mentioning, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a more robust vehicle. If the GC was priced too high, it would lose some of its appeal. A marketer's wet dream is having a hot product priced right with enthusiastic consumers and strong demand right off the bat.

Personally, based on my past experience I would never buy an X3 over the GC. The GC rides as nice as any other comparable vehicle and I'd say it's even better over rough roads. The only reason I could see for wanting an X3 would be for personal styling taste and the need for sports car handling performance with just a little bit more space over a regular sports car. Different strokes for different folks.

That said, I prefer the GC's look (interior and exterior) over the pricier competition. The only place I might see the GC falling behind would be in performance oriented on-road driving and, in the case of the Q5 2.0T, the fuel economy. Of course, on-road performance driving is not the intended purpose of the GC. Off-road, there is little competition and none at all if price is a factor. I'm waiting to see the Mineral Gray before I buy, but I'm buying a GC over the X3 and Q5. For those who want to "buy American", the GC offers us a chance to do that without any dissonance; it's that good. Kudos to Chrysler (and Fiat for forcing a rework of the interior) for pulling it off.

X5 now gets to $60K pretty quick. $80K+ if you opt for the big dog - X5M.

BMW keeps upscaling all of their models which in turn jacks the price up, so they have to come out with new ones that meet the "mainstream" price points, hence the new "X1".

They are going to run out of numbers though - next will be the "X1/2". :D

Good points, but truthfully the GC is more in line with the X5 and Q7 than the X3 and Q5 - these are considered compact SUVs (or crossovers). But as you and I stated, all depends on what your intended use is - GC will outperform these others off-road, but for daily street driving, I think the German offerings are going to give you a more refined and sporty ride, but for a price. Again, I love my X5, but I always look forward to jumping in the GC when I can and can't wait to have it as a daily driver. Just need to lower it and throw some sways on it so it will be closer to the ride I get with the X5.
