Initial Thoughts: 2007 WK Hemi to WK2 Pentastar

Well, I have been in my new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland for a few days now. Everything I have read about fit and finish is exceedingly true. The vehicle is a solid build all around. I am especially pleased with the responsiveness of the steering and the lack of road noise within the cabin.

I moved from a well-tuned 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Hemi, and stepped down to the V6 for my new purchase. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t somewhat apprehensive about the move. I do not tow often, and when I do… it is usually smaller items. However, I do have an exceedingly steep driveway, and having the power of the V8 has always been appreciated. And it’s always nice to know you have the power when you find the need to add some extra weight to the gas pedal.

I have been pleasantly surprised by the responsiveness of the Pentastar engine. No, I do not get the sudden surge of power as I did with the Hemi, but there is sufficient muscle behind the V6 when asked to step it up a bit. I will be interested to see what comes along regarding gearing for future models, but the 5-speed transmission is fairly smooth, and very responsive if wanting a little fun by manually shifting. One major plus is not hearing the sucking sound… and watching the gas gauge fall when asking the Hemi to perform. All joking aside, the power of the Hemi cannot be ignored, but the Pentastar engine is more than enough power for your average person. If you’re trying to decide between the two, I would highly recommend test driving both vehicles to see the difference. But if you are not needing the power of the Hemi, the V6 is certainly a capable option. I like… :)

I’m still making my way through all the different vehicle options and features, but wanted to point out a few items I like. I love the tilting mirror feature when backing up. The ambient lighting is a classy touch. Vehicle controls are well placed and easy to read and operate. The 730n is working like a dream, and the iPod control is a major plus in my book. Love the 20” wheels… even though that limits some off-road capabilities. Oh, and my wife is happy… which trumps everything! ;)

A miniscule aesthetic gripe: The ambient lighting for the Overland is quite nice, but I wish they would have carried it to the under dash lights as well. I added the illuminated door sill guards and fog light bezels (see images). The wiring harness for the door sill guards are up under the dash and took much longer to install then I thought it would take. Be forewarned...

Thanks for the review and congrats on the Overland. Looks beautiful. Did you find that the mirrors get in the way when turning corners? Bit too large perhaps? I guess I'm used to the smaller mirrors on the 1998 ZJ I used to have.

The fog light bezels are a nice touch to the front, adding just a bit of sparkle to match the other chrome.

I can't wait to get one, but I am waiting a year or so for a new transmission and bugs to be worked out. It seems like everyone is getting the Overland model.

Very nice to hear your comments and beautiful pics taken.
I drove both the V6 and V8. I agree the V6 feels quite adequate for everyday purposes. I ended with the V8 mostly to satisfy my heart but the mileage will definately be missed. I too am coming from a V8, '02 Overland 4.7L, which I felt gave better mileage than the 5.7L despite what I'm told.
Overall though, the GC has made marked improvements and I couldn't be happier.

waiting for bugs to be worked out is an old myth. Perhaps true a decade ago. Today, not so. The technology used from concept to production far exceeds what was available in the past. Regarding new transmission, meaning 6 or 7-speed. To the average driver out there, they will not notice a difference. If they do, marginal. I have experienced the transition from 5 to 7 speed in my Infiniti G. Honestly, a marginal difference from the driver's seat.

I don't completely agree. Things may have improved, but there are always bugs to be worked out. Especially now that there is so much electronics/software controlled components that can introduce software bugs. If my old ZJ weren't totaled I wouldn't become a beta-tester for Jeep :D

The vehicle does feel a bit larger, but no... I haven't had any issues with the mirrors.

Of course, I now have to knock on wood... as I may have just jinxed myself!

Try driving an F350 Ford long wheelbase 4 door truck with the factory trailer mirrors for ten years like I have. Everything else is a tiny dream to drive and park. I feel like I can park my '01 cherokee in my back pocket.
