Paint Imperfections - 2011 Blackberry WK2

Hey guys,

I drove my brand new 2011 Blackberry Pearl JGC Laredo X off the lot on saturday. By the time they finished prepping the car, getting docs signed, etc. we were in very low light. Well sunday rolls around and I start checking this bad boy out. Turns out, there are several, if ever so small, paint imperfections on the car.

What do I mean by imperfections, well they are tough to see in the blackberry paint but they basically spots in which the paint looks discolored by some chemical agent. Almost as if something interacted with the paint prior to the clear going on.

The spots are metallic in color and change color similar to a gas/oil spot when light reflects of off it at different angles. Moreover, I found these in 4 different panels.

So I called the dealer, they told me to visit their bodyshop. The bodyshop proceeded to check it out and determine it was a factory error. They took pictures of the imperfections and proceeded to make a claim. I will keep you guys posted as to how they handle the situation. What scares me a bit is that its a new color and what looks to be a very intricate paint job.

I'll try to post pics ASAP... tough to find the right lighting to make them show up on the photos.

One of the biggest complaints I had with my 2010. I had a place on the tailgate with paint run spots and then chunks of crap under the paint on the rocker panel of the rear passenger door.

Dealer looked at it and said it would require repainting to get rid of it - with it being black and only being seen in certain light, I didn't want to take a chance of them screwing up the entire paint job, so I opted not to have them fix it; however I have it documented in case I ever have issues with it (plus I know the owner of the dealership).

Despite these issues, I was disappointed with the overall paint job - besides the orange peel look of it, when you look down the side of it you can see waves. Guess after owning a BMW and Mercedes I am used to a much nicer job.

From the issues I had with the stealer when I had my water leak, it was explained to me that dealers are no longer allowed to fix paint or body issues (such as a headliner in my case) without authorization from Chrysler. My stealer said the same thing they have to take photos and do a bunch of paperwork and submit a claim to get authorization from Chrysler to do the work otherwise they dont get paid. Unlike say a TSB fix or flashing the PCM they can do that work automatically and get paid for the warranty work.

Update: went to the dealer to have them remove some of the remaining protective film adhesive and told them not to mess with the paint issues.. guess what, they buffed them and hid them in what looks like a dodgy fix similar to what was done to another forum member's dark charcoal JGC. I pointed this out to them and had them put down in writing what was done.. luckily, the chrysler approved bodyshop had already taken pictures and submitted the claim.. I will settle for no less than new paint. I will keep you guys posted on how this turns out.. Im so mad at the dealer right now...

thats a real bummer. hope they fix it on your terms and make it RIGHT instead of concealing it.

If repainting is the cure, be sure they do the entire vehicle and not just several panels. A body shop won't be able to match the same metallic effect, and you'll wind up with discolorations instead of fixes!

Ca you elaborate how this would be done - full repaint? Would old paint have to be stripped to the bare metal?

Not sure how they would have to do that...not in the business, but I doubt they would need to scrub down to bare metal. However, the metallics applied at the factory are 'aligned' by using a positive/negative attraction technique that is not used by a body shop. So, the differences with the 'pearlcoat' finishes could be dramatic.

any reputable body shop can match that paint easy.....LOL. Its done every day of the week at bodyshops around the world. I have inferno red crystal pearl...a tri-coat that is very hard to match and Ive had paint work done many times without painting the whole vehicle.
