3.0 CRD Diesel/What transmission do they have?

What transmission comes with the 3.0 CRD is it the WA580 or the 545RFE or does it have a special oneof it's own?

Re: 3.0 CRD Diesel/What transmission do they have?

i think they have used both trans depending if its 4wd or not.
and i think its the same with rear axles. they have used the one like the limited but some of them have the D44A like then srt8. again, maybe due to 4wd systems.
All speculative as WKJeeps didnt seem to have an answer.

Ah so it's the Mercedes transmission then if it's the WA580. Nice thinking about getting one. Mercedes motor/transmission should = RELIABLE

operative word: should.

what engine are you mating this to? TC? what about the electronics needec to make it work?

also the wa580 was used in the 3.7 and in the srt8. im guessing they are different but which of the 2 went ionto the diesel??

WA580 is the same for the CRD, SRT8, and 3.7. I was getting a whole new Jeep not transplanting the motor/trans into the one I currently own.

Re: 3.0 CRD Diesel/What transmission do they have?

If the wa580 is bolted to a Chrysler motor it is a transmission made stateside, you can tell by the finish on the transmission housing (off the top of my head may be other indicators)... If the wa580 is bolted to a mercedes engine it is a german built trans. They are the same thing IIRC the stateside built box has a rougher finish and the german box has a smoother finish. Both the same trans, just ones built by a high american and one is built by a german dude ;)

the 3.0 does have the nag1 behind it.

Know that "reliable" has a price and the common repairs on the 3.0l can be VERY spendy. swirl valves are VERY common and just an indication of how crappy they are to do, some guys pull the transmissions to remove the turbo to access them... all hours you get to pay for ;) .

That said I dig diesel but dont work on em much, we have 4-5 other very solid diesel techs that make me picking up another skill catigory just stupid.

The CRD and the SRT8 WK1 (and also the CRD XK) and I think the 3.7 but not sure, use the Mercedes Benz W5A580, aka 5G-Tronic.

W = Transmission using a hydraulic torque converter
5 = 5 forward gears
A = Automatic transmission
580 = Maximum input torque capacity in Newton-meters (428 ft-lbs)

They are used because they can handle higher torque than the 545RFE supposedly, but mostly because it was (is still in some models) the flagship of mercedes for many years.
