5.7 Hemi Engine Break-In Oil Change

Any recommendations on how long I should go with the factory fill oil before I switch over to Mobil 1 0w20 synthetic oil? I have about 1100 miles on my 2011 Limited with the 5.7 Hemi. Just curious. The dealer tells me 3000 miles, and the service manual states 6000 miles.

First change at 1000 for me...gotta get those metal shavings outta there!

I'm at 4800 and counting. I decided I'm going to stick with the manual. No special break in oil is used, no early change is recommended in the manual, and the oil filter (presumably) works.

I'm not worried.

OP, see below scintilating oil thread that will cover everything you did and did not want to know. Evidently, lube is highly personal.

Me too.....many manufacturers are moving in that direction. Some (Porsche) recommend up to 20,000 km or 2 years for first oil change.

I've always followed that same advice.... Even though the oil filter captures almost all of the metal shavings from a new engine, I still feel better doing a filter and oil change after the first 1000 miles. Cheap peace of mind for me!

1000 for me, switched to full syn mobil 1

will do again at 4000 (so 3000 interval)

then get on an every 4K interval.

I will most likely do the first one myself between 2k and 3k, I have free oil changes for 3 years but I really dont trust these damn dealers.

Remember:

The service intervals in the manual are the MINIMUM requirements.

Who cares more about your Jeep...you, or the bean counters that calculate service intervals based on the length of the powertrain warranty?

Re: 5.7 Hemi Engine Break-In Oil Change

This is always a touchy subject and it varies from each person. The truth are there have been more studies that show no need for the frequent changes than there have been disproving them. Yes there will always be trash and shavings in the oil, but this is not detrimental to the engine. First change will be 6,000 miles for me and then if I switch to synthetic 10,000 intervals.... if regular oil 7,500 miles. No need to change any sooner in my book. I have done this will all my cars for the past ten years never had any problems. Oil and engines have advanced since the 3K intervals and there are still many that believe it helps to change every 3,000 miles. It might give those piece of mind, but really it ends up being excessive waste.

Manufactures wouldn't offer lifetime warranties if they thought their recommended oil change intervals were off. There is still plenty of padding in there to cover their A**.
