Wireless music idea

So I moved the ipod intergration cable from the glovebox (2007 GC w/ Nav) and routed into that cubby hole in front of the shifter, but it turns out its a pain in the ass because my iphone slides around and wont stay put, I may just turn that change slot in front into an actual ipod dock somehow.

I had this crazy idea that since there is this new thing called AirPlay, I wanted to A) install an AUX cable and replace the Satellite radio feature on the stereo, B) add a 12v outlet (or whatever voltage it is that you plug anything into in your house outlets) to plug in an apple airport express, and C) connect the aux cable into the airport express. By doing so, I believe I can stream music from my iphone wirelessly to the airport, which will then put it through to the car stereo.

Does any of this make sense, or am I 'trying to cross a river by building a boat instead of just swimming,' as a terrible analogy.

Let me know if I'm on the right track.

Not sure about your Airplay idea, but I'd like to share an idea for the Ipod itself.

In one of my other cars I had the Ipod cable in the glove box. I put a 2" piece of Velcro on the back of the Ipod (the fuzzy softer side) and the other piece (pointy side) on the vertical part of the glovebox.

Ipod stays put, quick n easy in/out, and a cheap fix over a store bought mount.

Could also work in that change slot, put the Velcro to either the left/right edge on the back side of the Ipod, and the other piece in the slot itself.

I'd imagine the airplay will suck up lots of battery life... something you'll have to look into more.

I'd do what fivespeed6 suggested... get some velcro.

If you don't want the velcro on your phone after you remove it from the vehicle, then you could probably find some dark foam and glue it into the cubby hole in front of the shifter to take up the additional space. That way the iphone doesn't have room to slide around.

Maybe some type of holster for the phone...put the velcro on the holster or case and put your phone in that. No velcro on the phone itself and still secure.
I'd also be concerned about airplay eating up the battery, unless you plugged it into a charger or something....interesting idea though.

Hey,
Thanks for all the great ideas, I thought about the velcro but I am pretty picky about the looks of my phone, so unless I had a harness or something it fit in, then velcroed that, maybe. The airplay idea would suck up a ton of battery, especially when I'm running the bluetooth for the uConnect also.

I really like the idea of being able to do the airplay on short trips, so I dont have to screw around with plugging the phone in or anything, I may just take the existing cable, feed it under the trim around the shifter, and have it coming up just in front of the center console, that way I could A) charge it, B) use normal ipods with it, and C) that would be optimal for long distance trips, and would feed into the normal 87.9 frequency.

The plan is that I would have that, but also have an AUX line to replace the sat radio (it never gets used anymore) and be able to have my friends play music thru their blackberries or whatever. I can manage moving the ipod connect cable, all I need is a 30pin extension cable, and thats easily moved, unless anyone can tell me that running a cable under the trim at the shifter is a bad idea for any reason.

BASICALLY I'm looking to add an AUX cable thats attached to the sat radio, and have a 12v wall outlet feeding into the glovebox, and make it run through the radio(?) so that it only has power when the electronics in the car do. How do I do that?

Sounds like you're over complicating things, but maybe I don't fully grasp the situation. I'm setting my ipod (it's really my girls ipod but she never uses it... had to mention this because everybody will call me out for the pink) up to where it's velcroed next to my keys. It'll stay in the vehicle 24/7. I have about 6 feet of additional cable if I need it. I can unplug my ipod and easily pull the cable out longer (unsnapping the compartment below the steering wheel and pulling additional cable out) if I have any buddies in the backseat who want to play their ipods...

Now I know you mentioned you wanted to use your iphone, but buying another ipod would probably be cheaper and easier than everything you're trying to do.

My plan is to make that lil cubby in front of the shifter into a dock for my iphone. I will post pics when done

Haha yeah I totally agree, I have 2 or 3 iPods that I could dedicate to the car, that's easily done, but my situation now is I have the iPod integration kit, I routed it thru in behind the AC & etc controls, and into the cubby hole. It charges with an adapter, but I figure I should move it or fix it, or even make it wireless. The airplay idea sounds fun but you may be right it could get expensive. The sat radio thing with an AUX cable seemed like a good idea because the jeep doesn't control the iPod/iPhone anyway, and I keep getting breaks of static at half max volume because the jeep isn't receiving a signal or the cable shook loose - that pisses me off most.
I want to make it so I can get in my car, everything just works and I can hit play on my iPhone without screwing around with cables or mounting or static or whatever, a wireless system seemed like the best idea since I would prefer to use the music on my iPhone.

My airplay idea works like this - get a small device that creates a wireless network in the car (obviously needs a power source) and connect an AUX cable from it to the car as a direct connection for music, the portable airport express routers from apple now have an AUX cable to do this. I can get in the jeep, pull the iPhone out of my pocket, and hit play on the music player - the phone streams the music wirelessly to the airport, and the airport puts it to the stereo via AUX cable.

The next best thing was this idea, but what if the car is in park, and what if you want to get some length on the cable?

adding on to that long post, the point is I don't have to screw around with any cables, connects instantly just like uConnect, and just works no hassle.

I'll leave the iPod integration kit in case I need to charge the phone

Re: Wireless music idea

Can anyone link me to tutorials on
A) installing a 12v power source (wk jeep with nav, only works when the radio does)
B) replacing SAT mode with an AUX source or a similar easy way to install an AUX cable, preferably not requiring additional power or some switch that I will forget to turn off

Thanks,
Birdman
