New member to JG - need your opinion.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to introduce myself to this great community. The information on this site has been a tremendous help with my decision to buy a JGC over other brands. I'm looking to purchase an Overland V8 4x2 in Stone White.

Here's my question, do you think it's worthwhile to wait for the new 730N to become available or should I just order the 430N now? I'm familiar with the feature difference but was wondering what the cost would be on the new 730N vs the current 430N?

Thanks in advance for your input, I hope to become a legit Jeep owner soon. :D

Welcome! I believe you have to buy from parts dept which will be around $2,500.

Thanks Tank47. I'm wondering if the new 730N option will be the same cost as the discontinued 730N on the window sticker.

I asked my dealer when I ordered my Overland about that, he seems to think the 430N with be the standard and the new 730N (when ordering starts) will have an upgrade price. Although he didn't have a clue what that might be. I ordered and got the 430N, I am used to Garmin navigation anyway.

When the original 730N was available as an option, its MSRP was $305 i believe. From what i can tell, the biggest difference is just the nav UI, which is just a personal preference. I hate both and can't believe no auto manufacturer has just used google maps as the UI yet.

Because it becomes useless the moment you're out of cell coverage range if you're relying on Google the entire time (as would happen with a cell phone based nav). They do use NAVTEQ maps, which are the same one Google uses in the vast majority of areas. Interface tends to be a personal preference thing, but Garmin is generally considered the leader in this area (I prefer TomTom's interface, but their TeleAtlas maps aren't as good as the NAVTEQ ones).

Thanks for the feedback. My dealer just called and said he found a White Overland V8 4x2 in Arizona that has the 730N (RER). Now I need to figure out if I want to pull the trigger on this one or wait for the new 730N. Flip a coin?

I have the current 730N. It works fine, but the maps are already outdated and not going to be cheap when the update comes out.

The features you'd pick up by waiting:
iPhone 4 compatibility (current RER will get an update in January with this)
Newer maps without paying $200 for the fresh set
USB port in the armrest for playing music directly off a thumb drive (in addition to being able to run an iPod to USB cable)
Sirius Travel Link
Hands free texting capability
Bluetooth streaming audio from a compatible phone

It remains to be seen if any of these capabilities can or will be added to the RER via software update. I'm not holding my breath.

It just depends on if you'd rather have it now. You won't lose anything by waiting a few months, but the wait can feel really long.

If this is the vehicle you want, I don't think it's worth the wait. Pull the trigger and get it! No matter what you do, 1 year from now there is going to be some advancement in technology that you shoulda, coulda waited for. If you keep thinking like that you'll never get anything!

@technosavant - Do you know if the iPhone 4 can connect to the car's bluetooth or is that feature incompatible at the moment as well? I don't plan to use my iPhone as an iPod but I really need to have hands free Bluetooth connectivity to my phone.

@tank47 - Now that I think about it, you're right. Thanks,

Bubs, not sure where you are located, but SoCal had a higher mix of in stock 2011 JGC 4x2's available when I went hunting two months ago. Maybe similar outcome for other warmer climate states, not sure.

My dealer thinks he's found one that he can transfer from another dealership. Hopefully we can make a deal over this Thanksgiving weekend. :D
