07 GC Check engine light problem

So me and my wife just purchased a used 07 Grand Cherokee. Its a 3.7L V6 with 42,000 Miles. We have had it for 3 weeks now and the check engine light has already gone one. I was driving it the other night when i backed out of a driveway. I then placed it in drive and continued down the street. Then i noticed it wasn't shifting in to 2nd gear. So I then had to pull over, turn the car off and on. It then shifted with no problem, although the check engine light has been on ever since.Has this happened to anyone else? I skimed through the forums looking for similar issues and did not see any.Any thoughts on what might be wrong?

Ok...does it typical cost to have a code pulled?

not at any place like adavanced or autozone.....they do it for free. there is also a key dance you can do yourself.....turn the key on and off 3x and leave it on on the third turn
