Newbie Question on Order from Dealer

I am strongly considering buying my first Jeep - WK2 Overland, 5.7L, 4x4, rear DVD, black on black - and this forum has been extremely helpful. If I order through a dealer, am I committed to buying the actual car that comes in? What I mean is that if the car that comes in has a shutter, scratch, or any other issue... is that still my car that I now have to deal with? I've purchased numerous new cars in my lifetime, but I've never ordered from the factory (alway took new off the dealer's lot).

Thanks for your help and sorry if this has been asked/answered before.

First off, welcome to the forum. Lots of good folks and info here.

I have ordered several cars and trucks over the years and my experience has always been that when the new car comes in you and the salesperson will go over it to make sure that it is what you ordered and that there is no apparent damage of paint or other noticeable problems. If you agree then you sign the final paper work and pay your money. If you don't accept it because of a problem the dealer will or should work with you to get it corrected. At least this has been my experience.

Ask your dealer.

Many of us who made an order early on were told that our deposits were fully refundable. I ended up bailing on mine (as did others) due to inexplicable delays between production and shipping (we found other vehicles on the lots and bought those). One fellow had his dealer throw a fit and threaten to sue (I don't believe he did), but mine was understanding and easy to deal with.

Much may depend on what you order; in demand trims (Overlands) may have more understanding from the dealer than if you order and bail on something that is more plentiful (Laredos).

It is one thing to just decide that you don't want the vehicle and another if the vehicle that came in was not what you ordered or has something wrong with it.

If the first case your dealer may very well keep your deposit or just apply it to another vehicle you get from him. In the second case you should expect to get any deposit back if it is not what you ordered or if there is major damage from shipping. I am sure each state has different laws that may cover this.

Living in a small town where folks know each other has some advantages. When ordering my last two vehicles (both new models) the dealers didn't ask for any deposit....gave me the ability to sell my trade before the new one arrived (offered a cash price and a trade price).....and said that if I didn't want the vehicle(s) when it came in...it was no problem; they would put em in inventory and sell em.

Neither vehicle was an odd color combo or had peculiar equipment choices however.

Techno is right. Talk to your dealer.

A few years back, I had ordered a Liberty... and it got dinged pretty badly during transit. It wasn’t anything major, but needed some body work and some buffing out of a few scratches. But... my dealer had seen my hesitancy... and offered to order me another Liberty. I actually switch to a Grand Cherokee during the second round, but my dealer was all about making it right.

But when you order you should be committed to purchasing upon arrival of the vehicle, as long as everything is copasetic.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm not talking about order and then changing my mind. When you buy off the lot, you can test drive, walk around, etc. and if there is ANYTHING you don't like you can move on to another car or leave altogether. I just wasn't sure about the protocol on a factory order. Thanks for all the input.

When we ordered our 2011 WK2 LTD we got the dealer to put in writing that if the vehicle came in wrong or we changed our mind and didn't want to buy a Jeep that they would refund the entire deposit.

Get any promises regarding deposit in writing on bill of sale

Got it in writing, notarized and signed by all parties involved with the deal.

Sounds like your the kinda guy that wears a belt and suspenders? OK....thats a joke....but seems a little excessive no? (notarized?) I'm not sure how much you put down....but if I was very unhappy with something I purchased and my dealer could not make it right....then I would have no problem with asking for (and receiving) my money back and walking away from the car.

The chances of this happening seem slim to none...IMO. But then again.....it's really up to you to do your homework before ordering....and know what your buying. ;)

The point of my original post was not an issue with lack of homework/research. The point (as I thought I said) was if the WK2 arrives with a defect - dent, scratch, shutter issue, lift gate not working, etc... basically any of the issues those on these forums have had - I don't want to own it only to have to send it in for service. I think I have my answer from other posts.
