Looking at XJ's

Looking at a few XJ Cherokees. Any year better than others? Think the I6 is the only way to go. Thanks

I'm going to get a XJ. I'm looking at the 97+. Def go with the I-6 and Select-Trac. Do you have a price range? You can find some pretty good deals.

There aren't all that many up here in the Pacific Northwest. I have just started to look. I've had a 1995 and 1998 get away from me. :(

I would go with the 2000-01 4.0 XJs if you can afford the little extra cost. You end up with a way better ignition setup (coil on plug), slightly better intake design, an exhaust manifold that doesn't always crack, and nicer badges. Otherwise the '97 and up are the next best, stay away from the pre '91 Jeeps. (less power, terrible wiring and electronics)

Selec-trac came as an option on the Limiteds, Country's, Classics, and the older Laredos. It might have been on some sports but I don't think I have seen that combo. The Selec-trac only came behind the automatic with the 4.0.

I have had several XJs and my friends have or have had many others. They are very reliable and tend to run well over 200K miles with no major problems.

hope this helps,
Brian

I had a '95 Sport 4.0 HO Manual Trans with Command Trac. It had 230K miles (180K were mine) and besides standard maintenance and a full OME lift, the only thing I had to replace was the transfer case. A good 1995 and upwards would be fine. I just let mine go a month ago -sorry.
