Replacing tires--a dumb question

Hey guys-

Finally getting around to replacing the tires on my 2000 WJ and I'm wondering if I actually need to buy 5 tires so I have a matching one on the full-size spare? I can tell you that unless there is a zombie outbreak, I'll never be taking this thing off-road so I wouldn't anticipate replacing it except for in emergencies. I'm exclusively city, highway, and snowy mountain road.

I have a brand new (but old, I'm sure) Goodyear on the full size spare that never looked like it was rotated in and I'm assuming that if I ever had to replace a tire I'd absolutely use an exact match--the spare would just be to get me home or to the tire place.

Can you give me some advice on this front? Thanks!

I would just replace the 4 that are on it. IMO, a spare tire is just to get you from the location you got a flat to the house or a tire store.

I also have a never used spare and just ordered 4 new all terrain tires. If I get a flat while offroad (I don't do anything serious, just fun in mud) the spare will be enough to get me home.

I have a buddy who rotates his tires ever 3k miles and he rotates his spare into the mix. Doesn't make sense to me.

if you have a 247 TC and the wear is really off between the spare and the other can damage the TC.

reason why you rotates in the spare is to keep the treads even between all 5 and if a tire is not use it can go bad. will look good but might have dry rot or get cracks .

any odd thing can damage a tier even going in to pot pot hole can damage the side wall and cause the tier to pop. check to see if theirs any cracked between the groves if your spare.

also think of t this way, if one goes bad and your on a trip or straped for car you know you dont have to rush right away to get the bad one fixed, its the best thing to do but if you have a good spare dont have to worry about things as much

I recently replaced my tires and I only purchased 4.If something happens and I need to use the spare it would only be for a short time anyway

Yeah, so my existing spare has never been rolled (it's still got the blue stuff on it) but it's a Goodyear Wrangler, which I believe was the stock tire on the vehicle when sold in 2000--which means it was probably made in late 90's. I think I'll definitely buy the 5th tire.

Thanks everybody for the advice.
