official: can't disable esp

Just got off the phone with my dealer and chryco.
there is indeed no way to disable the ESP system fully.

the guys at chryco customer assistance direct me to the dealership, who has no answer beyond "press the button."
neither would tell me who next to contact regarding the system, although i tried to reason with them that "somebody out there designed this system and knows it well. who is that." i am quite frustrated that i have been stone walled.

i recently got stuck in the mud because i couldn't power through it which prompted this string of inquiries.

dunecrawler recently complained of being unable to use the hemi's massive power to muscle through the dunes like the previous model.

this seems so absurd for a truck that is from a company that makes the most capable 4x4s around. my previous BMW made it through the same mud hole on all season tires with ESP turned off. cmon.

i'd pull the fuse, but then its bye bye ABS as well.

Thanks from me for the try though.
I also did some digging, and was told I could remove the fuses. When I asked if they meant all 3, they obviously had no clue what I was talking about, but said yes all 3.
I am not convinced that it would not damage the electronics somehow. These things can be very fussy. I might get a loaner from the dealer or a rental and try it...watch this space

That is something they should be able to correct with a flash. I hope Chrysler is listening; when the button to turn of ESP doesn't turn off ESP then it's disingenuous to even have that button.

I am sure it is just a software issue that can be addressed with a flash, but even if they were listning AND did something about it, how long do you think it would take for that information to filter down to us?
By that time it will be time for a new vehicle again anyway.

I would bet my manhood that there is more than one Chrysler engineer perusing forums like this. Internet forums are the best marketing and engineering feedback tool for manufacturers. If Jeep sees this as a critical issue that could affect its stature in the off-road world, they will first try to replicate the problem you had and if they can reliably repeat the issue, it will be addressed. If they are following this thread, it would behoove them to address the disable-ESP button function so that it truly disables the ESP. However, the lawyers will probably be the hindering factor. Can we build a "disable lawyers" button instead?;)

hearing your story confirmed that i was not just an isolated incident. there will be more complaints, i'm sure.

and jeep engineers would be idiots to NOT devote time to reading what we all say.

Re: official: can't disable esp

this might sound stupid but when i got my lift i couldnt turn very fast because of the esp
so to fix it i would have to press the button for couple of seconds to turn it off and it could turn with no issues after that. so i assume this might work for you

...to say the least. And having a light on the dashboard with the ESP icon and the word "OFF" when it's not really off. WTH, Chrysler?

forgive my ignorance, i own and love a 95 GC, but what does happen when the button is pushed and the light says "OFF?" what does it in fact do??

The 4Runner guys have the same exact problem. They can work around it by simply popping apart a connector near the master cylinder that will complete disable it. Some guys have even wired in a simple switch so they can turn it on/off completely from the driver's seat. I bet something similar can be done on the new WK2.
