8 speed tranny update :)

some positive news!

Chrysler is getting serious about its eight-speed transmission plans as evidenced by a new report by TheDetroitBureau.com saying that Auburn Hills plans to pull ahead its production schedule. It takes money to make things things like this happen, and Chrysler has announced it is investing $85 million into its Kokomo Transmission Plant in Indiana. That $85M will get added to a rather large pile of cash because Chrysler has already announced an investment amount of $843 million for its various Kokomo facilities.

The eight-speed was originally slated for production at Chrysler's Indiana Transmission Plant I, but the move to Kokomo allows ITPI to focus on a new front-wheel drive transmission.

It's a good move, but I'm doubtful of huge performance gains in the WK2 aside from that lower 1st gear helping the V6 WK2s get off the line quicker. Perhaps some gains in city MPG ratings are to be had but doubtful there's much help for highway MPG. Regardless, I'm glad they are building them in the U.S.

I wouldn't be suprised if the 8 speed unit couldn't handle the torque reliably. Same reason v12 mercs are still saddled with a 5 speed unit..though a ZF 8 speed handles 400 just fine in the BMW 750/550.

Yep, that's true (although the 8 speed is not yet available on the 7-series).;)

The new Touareg has a 8 Speed ZF and the 3l and 4.2l Diesel generates more torque then a HEMI. I know the 8 Speed ZF from the new Porsche Cayenne Turbo, and that automatic transmission is superior. Would like to have to $ to buy one ;-)
