Mil

Hey all,
I posted on here last month about my truck sometimes reving high (over 2200rpm and making a whining noise when i start it. I haven't figured out why it does this yet, but it seems to do it when its cold (maybe? not even sure anymore).

Anyway, I got a dtc the other day, P0132 "02 sensor 1 bank 1" via the key dance trick. I figured either the change to cold weather or a glitch set it off. I planned to drive it for a day or two and see if it went off.
Next day I realized my MDS was not activating and figured the ECU saw the MIL and prevented MDS from activating to prevent any sort of damage? I decided to check the code again and now P1128 was present as well, "open loop fuel not achieved".

This seemed to make sense...O2 sensor fault-possibly something wrong so don't activate MDS incase something is wrong-run in closed loop because O2 sensor fault could mean faulty data being used to set air to fuel ratio. PLEASE CORRECT ME IF THIS LOGIC IS WRONG!

Anyway, I decided to disconnect the battery to clear the codes, started it up and codes were gone. 5 seconds into the idle (motor was warm from previous drive) it dropped the idle so low it almost stalled. Motor almost jumped out of the darn car it was running so rough! I turned it off, started again = idle was a little bit better. Turned off again and idle seemed fine. Now its idling around 600-700rpm when warm.
MIL has not come back on and MDS worked for the rest of the day. Next day (today) and not MIL BUT MDS isn't working again.

My questions are:
1) What might have set of the P0132? Glitch? Cold weather?
2) Would driving with P0132 cause the MDS to not activite?
3) Would driving with either of the two above cause P1128?
4) Why did the truck idle so poorly the first and second time it ran after battery disconnect? (perhaps the fuel mapping neede to find its parameters?) Is 600-700rpm a normal idle when warm?
5) I now have no check engine light but MDS isn't working. MDS did work after clearing codes but isn't working now (even though there are not MILs). Any ideas?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, James

Re: Mil

I should have mentioned that the truck has 54k miles on it.
If it is a bad sensor (kinda premature isn't it) the light will likely come back on, but why is the MDS not working now? And its not my lead foot causing the problem.

Re: Mil

Ok,
So I bought an O2 sensor from autozone (bosch). Did my replacent job and the codes came back.
The sensor I got had the plug on it, but my car has not plug, the sensor was wired right into a bundle of wires. I cut off the old sensor, keeping track of the wires and spliced it into the new sensor (cut off the plug) in the same order. If i look at the back of the old and new sensor there is a black, gray, and two white wires. I wired the gray to gray, black to black, and white to white (left to left and right to right).

Is it possible that the whites are mixed up and the left on the old sensor is right on the new sensor? Does it even matter if the whites are mixed up (heater wires?)

Any help with O2 sensor wiring and logic would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, James

Re: Mil

Step 1...

Take out that bosch sensor, with the bosch sensor in hand head into the kitchen (make sure not to get handprints on anything). open the cabinet under the sink and throw sensor into the garbage.

Chryslers are REALLY picky about some things (example, sparkplugs... O2 sensors). Go to the dealer and pick up an OEM replacement.

Re: Mil

Does anyone have info specific to the wiring?

Has anyone else experienced problems with Bosch O2 sensors?
What other aftermarket brands should I avoid?

Thanks, James

Re: Mil

everyone that I have heard of replacing their 02's with something other than the oem had trouble sometime.

Re: Mil

OEM worked fine right away...The jeep didn't like the Bosch sensor.
Thanks all

;)

Its tough to spend the money twice, I felt your pain.

I am happy they worked for you!

James,

I've had these similar conditions on-and-off for some time. :banghead: It's very frustrating when MDS is inoperative and no DTC's are active. MDS is locked out whenever a primary DTC is set and active. DTC will clear after 3 "good trips" but code will remain in memory.

O2 sensor codes are a newer issue for me. All four O2 sensors replaced (MOPAR OEM) and both cats replaced <3K miles ago. Codes P0133 & P0153 for O2 sensors 1/1 & 2/1 slow response respectively. Happened 3 times in a 1-week period. Also had a Cat 2 efficiency DTC. Dealer & Chrysler have not been able to develop effective corrective actions yet.

You'll probably think I'm totally daffy, but change your radiator cap (18 psig). The spring was weak on mine (OEM factory & 3.5 yrs old) and coolant temp was down from original. Now, it's back up and everything is functioning (at least for now).:wtf: I didn't do anything else to change the parameters.

Idle speed of 600-750 rpm (in gear) is normal, but there is no specific idle speed rpm for these 5.7L HEMI engines (at least the '08's).
