11 WK First Oil Change Question

Hello All,

Just picked up my 11 WK Laredo today, so far it looks and drive great.

I know this is a loaded Question. LOL As all oil questions are.

I plan on doing my first oil change at 1000 Miles.

Should I go synthetic or convention oil?

I eventually plan on going synthetic and do 4000 or 5000 mile oil changes. I know the manual call for 8000 mile oil changes but that seems to be a bit long for my comfort. I have always done oil changes every 3000 miles.

Thanks
Frank G

Synthetic, 0-20 or 5-20.

Re: 11 WK First Oil Change Question

One of the premium synthethic manufacturers (Royal Purple) recommends that you have at least 2500 miles on conventional oil before switching to their synthetic. That said, I am also one of those that changs the oil @ 1000 on a new car.

So...I used Castrol GTX 5w-20 and a Mobil 1 filter and did the job myself. Initially my plan was to switch to Royal Purple at 2500, but lately I'm inclined to wait until 5000 miles because I'm still burning oil at 2200 miles. I sincerely hope this is because the engine is not completely broken in - thus my inclination to wait until 5000 before switching.

Re: 11 WK First Oil Change Question

Im trying to figure out a mait. squedule. on this WK.

What Im thinking is first oil/Filter change 1000 miles Conventional 5w30(I have the 3.6L)

Probably the second at 3000 (Dealer does this one free for new vehicles) NO DOUBT the dealer uses conventional oil.

I will switch over to Mobil 1 Synthetic "5000 mile Oil" after the 2nd oil change and every 5000 miles thereafter. (since manual still calls for oil ever 8000 miles, i should still be ahead)

Whats anyone's opinion on this?

Thanks

Sounds good to me. My plan is a change at 1000 with conventional (already done), next change at 2500 with conventional, then at 5000 with synthetic and every 5000 thereafter.

Re: 11 WK First Oil Change Question

why would anyone these days drain out the factory fill oil with "break-in" additives so early these days. the specific oil is there to help with break-in and should be left for the manufacturer's specified interval. if anything, just change out the filter and top it off. because you think the metal particles magically stop appearing because one put in synthetic? IMO, i would leave the oil in for 3000 miles and change the filter once in between...

You sure about those "break-in" additives, or is this just speculation? My information is that factory fill is simply off-the-shelf type motor oil.

My dealership and the Jeep manual (written by the manufacturer of the WK2) recommends first oil change at 8,000 miles.

Why in the world anyone would deviate from that is beyond me...

Re: 11 WK First Oil Change Question

i know for a fact, maybe not chryco, that euro brands such as vw/audi/bmw/mercs have specific break-in oil. whether or not chryco uses one, i am not 100% sure, but i believe they will put in something that is in spec with their motors early on in their life. why would you put in something different? the minute you take the oil out after the 1000 miles, if there are any more metal shavings to be put out by the engine, its not going to stop because you put in synthetic, just my logic. changing the filter seems like the more logical thing to do...

I changed the oil today on my v8 overland with 1000 miles on it and put in
synthetic Mobil 1. Who knows what's right or wrong. I say get the shavings out and the best oil in at 1000 miles.

Yep, This is a totally loaded Question, Ask 10 people and 10 Different Answers. Who knows which one is right.

Iv "heard" that the "break in oil" is a total myth. They put in conventional oil right from start.

As far as 8000 miles oil changes. Im hearing that car makers push extended oil changes changes to appeal to the tree huggers and make there line appear environmentally friendly. There is government regulations pushing this agenda onto the car manufactures. WHO KNOWS????

I seriously doubt that CHRYCO uses Synthetic Oil on the Jeep line or their entire line for that matter.

I got the same thing from Chrysler, its regular dinosaur oil, not synthetic. Also as mentioned there is no such thing as "break-in" additives.

I agree with this Mobil 1 5w-20 changed at 1000, then will do at 4000 (3000 interval) and then every 4000 after that.

8000 is ridiculous. 8000 kilometers maybe definitely not miles, that is beyond the longest service interval of either the "A" or "B" service schedule. But hey its your engine, feel free to destroy it.
