WK2 versus Ford Explorer

The 2011 Ford Explorer is picking up some very good reviews. I am a bit concerned by some references to the ride of the WK2 compared to the Ford Explorer. The following is from the December 17th New York Times
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/19/au....html?_r=1&hpw
Meanwhile, the ride remains comfortable, and body motions are carefully and yet gently controlled. I also drove a 2011 Grand Cherokee on the same roads, and in contrast its ride often felt busy, with a lot of tight, sometimes jiggly movements. One particularly annoying movement on the Jeep was a side-to-side rocking that was virtually absent in the Explorer.

Up to now I have dismissed the Explorer as just a Taurus wagon. I pick-up my 2011 WK2 next week (yeah!), but hope that the road performance does not disappoint.

What do you make of these comments?

I have noticed no jiggles. Just smooth, firm road holding.

It's the New York Times. 'Nuff said, if you're familiar with their "reviews." Wait for Consumer Reports and Edmunds, among others, for credible test data and commentary.

They're the first ones to think the Grand Cherokee's on road manners aren't great.

I'm not sure the Explorer and GC are really comparable. They aren't far off in size, but the Explorer is really closer in concept to the GMC Yukon and assorted GM vehicles- the platform is a modified Taurus platform and it's a 3 row minivan replacement. It would compare more directly to the coming Durango- the GC is set up for more off roading; I'd expect the Durango to be optimized for street driving.

Here is an WSJ article on Explorer, makes some good points.

Thats a great review. Finally someone really questioning the FORD company. I personally think the mytouch is cool, but it has way to much going on and will cause accidents.

Some good points, but only time will tell. Right now Ms. Exply is the new centerfold, getting the expected media gush and goo. We'll see how the lady looks in the morning, with her makeup wearing thin.

For me, those Ford grilles look like Gillette razor blades on steroids.

I love the way mine rides, I was a ford truck man the past few years, needed a pickup after I totally my old ZJ and bought a ranger then an F150 FX4. Now maybe it is just my style of ride, but I like a stiff firm ride. My mom drives a GMC Envoy and it has way too soft of a suspension for me, bounces like a waterbed going over speed bumps. I will take my Jeep over that Explorer any day.

The article certainly points out that the Explorer has moved away from off road use even more than the Grand Cherokee has. While they both seem to meet the needs of everyday on road use vehicle.
I think this is good for Jeep keeping it, relatively speaking the "off road" SUV

The front grill is so hideous on the Ford though.

"On an off-road course set up by Ford in the hills of Southern California, the Explorer managed to negotiate some water crossings and some mud ruts, and managed with difficulty to hump over a steep incline, but it is distinctly not a 4x4. The Explorer's archrival Jeep Grand Cherokee utterly crushes the Ford off road."

I think this article is spot on. If you don't plan to tow or go off road, the Explorer is probably a better choice than the WK2. If you don't go off road, but need towing capability, the Durango is probably the best choice.

Dan Neil is my favorite auto writer and his reviews are usually on target and always hilariously worded. Worth looking up to read some of his past stuff for those of you who aren't already fans.
