Stranded!

Well I had my official first bad experience with my WK2. Got out of work after a long day to go meet my co-workers for our holiday dinner. It's freezing outside, so I try to start my jeep remotely, but I don't see my lights flash. I get up closer to the vehicle and try to unlock remotely... nothing. Press lock... nothing.

Walk up, grab the handle, and she unlocks. hmmmmm. Hop in, go to start the vehicle... NOTHING. Pop the starter button out, pull the hard key out of the FOB, insert and turn...NOTHING. No ACC, no ignition, but interior lights are good, head lights work, etc so not a dead battery.

Had it towed to the dealer next morning for service. Preliminary explaination is the wireless controller part of the computer would not recognize my FOB and basically locked down the entire ignition system. (interesting feature i guess) The whole unit needs replacing and my FOBs all need repogramming. Naturally the part is not in stock so I have to wait, and a case was opened with Chrysler.

Ironically, the same thing happened to my boss in his Jeep Unlimited 2 weeks prior. Service tech confirmed this is more of a Chrysler thing versus a WK2 due to shared components, so don't start sweating just yet and 1st year model haters relax. Only symptoms I can think of was my FOB range was noticably decreasing and sometimes the FOB wasn't responding.

Anyway, what a PITA, especially since I'll be driving all across NJ for Xmas and snow is forecasted - that and I'm stuck with a base model 4 banger Ford Fusion as my loaner. :(

I would have demanded something in comparison for a loaner. Your driving a 45K$ vehicle and they give you a FWD CAR with a 4cyl that's half the cost. I wouldn't accept that...just me at least.

Re: Stranded!

At this particular dealer the loaners are through a rental agency (no charge of coarse) so more or less get what they have available at the time, but I gotta say, I was rather disappointed with the whole process.

It's the only thing I really regret about purchasing at this dealer. If you've ever been to an Audi or BMW dealership, they are all about customer experience when it comes to this part of the relationship. Here, not so much.

That sucks. I thought the entire purpose of the hard key was to bypass the FOB in case it doesn't work. Doesn't make sense that the hard key wouldn't be able to start the car. (even if the system doesn't recognize the FOB) You can open the door with the key, why wouldn't you be able to start the car with it? Chrysler needs to go back and reexamine what a hard key should and should not be able to do. (like start one's vehicle)

Once again, your driving a Jeep. Not a BMW

When my Lincoln broke down (often), I was driving anything from a 4th gen Ford Taurus to a Lincoln Town Car. I only had two Lincoln, one being the Town Car and the other being another MKZ and that was only because those rentals were from Enterprise and not from the dealership. Most of the break downs happened in the winter time and my Lincoln was a AWD and I was given a FWD or RWD rental. Come to think about it, the only 4WD rental car that I have ever gotten was the WK2 and that was through my insurance. Paying 45K does not mean that they roll out the red carpet, I'm sure the dealership max is only pay 35 bucks per day for a rental which is a normal rate at most dealerships that sale Jeeps and other cars in that class.

As for the OP, I have notice that my key fob just don't want to work at times. I wonder if its going through the same thing?

I have to say that Lexus has been the best in my experience for taking care of you when they have to keep your car. When I had a Jag and a RR, I would always get some Enterprise POS as a rental. But I bought my current WJ as a pre-owned vehicle from the Lexus dealer and when it had to go in for a blend door problem, they put me in a brand new RX for several days, and specifically told me not to worry about putting gas in it when I returned it. That's one of the reasons I looked for so long and hard at the LS460, but then the whole Toyota meltdown bummed me out on the brand. I think the Lexus owner experience is probably one of the best though.

Sorry to hear about the inconvienence.

The whole rental situation and experience is just a jeep thing and what chrysler has always slacked in.

at least they dind't give you a minivan. When my wife came home with one, that is when I decide to call every number i found to complain. I was more pissed about the rental than about all the problems I am having....

I now have a patriot. ( rides nice by the way) next time, I will just buy to fo those, or two compasses, instead of the "GRAND". but maybe I will just go for the BMWs.

My local Merc dealer (Mercedes Benz of Bend) offers me a loaner even when I am just getting the oil changed. They only do rentals for cars that are going to be in the shop longer than a week, otherwise they just give you one of their loaner cars which is usually a low end C class or ML350.

X2..... What happens if the battery in the key fob goes dead? I guess you are stuck then by this logic. Doesnt make sense to me thats for sure.

Merc,Audi,BMW,LR or VW V8 SUVs all cost over 20K more than a Grand Cherokee Overland V8. With the 20K you save you can rent any car you want while your car is repaired. That free C class loaner is not free its in the high price of the cars at the Mercedes dealer.

I agree but part of the reason they can charge more is the quality of the dealership experience. I think if chrysler really wants to get serious about a comeback the quality of the cars has to improve of course, but also the problems that do occur need to be handled better at the dealership level.

VW and Audi no longer offer V8 suvs but I'd argue their 3.0 TDI engine is better than the hemi.
