Anybody changed a 4.7 power steering pump?
My power steering hasn't been working too well in slow speed parking situations for a while now and seeing as we're driving down to Disney in march I'm gonna tackle changing it. Steering works fine down the road but since the fan is involved I'm a little concerned though it's never overheated. The job looks straightforward enough but what I was wondering is how hard is it to get the pulley off the old pump and onto the new? I have an assortment of pullers but any tips would be appreciated cause I don't want to screw it up. Thanks guys.

Hi Dave, doesn't the new pump come with pulley?
The jeep manual says that you can remove the pulley with a puller, but that you shouldn't reuse the pulley again. Maybe that you overstress the material when taking it off? Attached the puller with P/N, but doesn't seem to be so special.

Re: Anybody changed a 4.7 power steering pump?
I have remove some pulleys off of power steering pumps and some of them are quite a huge pain. I always try to avoid having to remove them because of the time and effort oftentimes needed and my pullers never seem to fit. Installing them is normally done with a simple bolt and washer. That isn't always easy but it is far easier than removing the pulley.

You should be able to buy a new pulley. I would go that route if at all possible.

hope this helps,

Re: Anybody changed a 4.7 power steering pump?
Frank,I wish the pulley came with the pump but nope I even have to use my ps reservoir from the old pump. Brian, after your post I looked around and I can get a new pulley for $13 so I think I'll go that route.I think I'll take it to work and use a press. Thanks for the quick responses and all your help guys! Have a Happy New Year!

Re: Anybody changed a 4.7 power steering pump?
I believe you really shouldn't use a press to install the pulley. It should say that on the pump. That normally can damage the pump itself and void the warranty. I am not familiar enough with the 4.7 PS pump to know for sure but if there is a shaft that has a threaded hole in it you should just tighten a bolt with a washer on that will compress the pulley down flush with the shaft. You just need to find a way to hold the pulley in place while you tighten the bolt. I used a oil filter strap wrench.

My 5.9 works this way. That stupid pulley is plastic and exploded on me while driving one hot day.

Hmmmm.....good point Bri thanks bud probably going to have to use a long bolt and socket cause it looks like it seats down past the end of the shaft.

Re: Anybody changed a 4.7 power steering pump?
you need a bolt with a nut on it... thread the bolt in tight, then use the nut against the washer holding the bolt while spinning down the nut.

I am not sure if there is a parts note about it, but when I replace pumps at work they get brand new resivors, Ive discussed it with other techs with no real reason as to why this is such, but we never come to a conclusion beyond it being warranty CYA incase there is debris loaded up in the resivor.

Re: Anybody changed a 4.7 power steering pump?
Hi Dave, here some istructions on how far to install the pulley:

Install pulley on pump with Installer C-4063-B
or equivalent installer (Fig. 19). The front edge of the
pulley hub must be flush with the end of the shaft.
Ensure the tool and pulley are aligned with the
pump shaft.
(3) Install pump assembly.
(4) With Serpentine Belt, run engine until warm (5
min.) and note any belt chirp. If chirp exists, move
pulley outward approximately 0.5 mm (0.020 in.). If
noise increases, press on 1.0 mm (0.040 in.).
careful that pulley does not contact mounting

So what was the outcome. Did you end up reusing the original pulley?
