emblem template

hey so i tried painting (plasti dip) one of my emblems black while it was still on my jeep... turned out to be a total mess and just took them off and cleaned up. Now i want to re paint the emblems while they are off and then throw them back on again. I know everyone loves the way WK's look debadged but im going for something different here.

Anyway, does anyone know of a template i could use when putting back on some of the emblems? Specifically the 4x4 on the tail gate along with the Jeep emblems front and back.

Thanks!

Easy bra. Paint em n get a ruler to line em up, use some blue painters tape to line them up together and bam, done!

Re: emblem template

thats the easy way of doing it... im looking to keep the same proportions as OEM... sure i can eye ball everything so that it is pretty close, but if there was a template available i would rather use that.

yea i know what you are saying

but as long as you make a bottom and top border for your badges...it isn't that bad

i've helped a friend make a template with painter's tape on top and bottom
as well as vertical dividers to the size and spacing between the individual letters

in order to figure out location, we found a jeep at a mall and took some quick measurements :P

What was the problem with Plasti dipping them while they were on the car?

Did you try using playing cards for around the edges and just blue tape and patience for the inside of the letters?

haha yeah thats more like it... i should have taped off the emblem before i actually pulled it off, but my plan originally was to keep them on however, i messed up and ended up having to take them off... good call on the measurements though!

yeah man, i taped off everything... i already did it with my front logo and it came out really nice, but for some reason the 4x4 didnt go as well... instead of taping off everything i used playing card like material around the edges so i wouldn't peal off the plasti dip when it all dries, but the stuff i used i guess didnt work too well... it was a mess. I took off the emblems and cleaned off everything on the jeep and the emblems. I re painted the 4x4 while its off and it looks way cleaner but now i gotta put it back on again, we'll see how that goes.

you can do it, the only problem is when the plasti dip dries out it tends to stick to the tape under the emblem. When you pull off the tape, even if you are super delicate the plasti dip kinda wants to stretch off as well because it bonds a little bit with the tape and it doesnt give it a nice clean look. If you do it well you arent able to see where it stretches but it takes a lot of time and patience.

from my experience i think the best way to paint a logo black is to tape off the top and sides of the emblem with some blue painters tape and make as many marks as possible as to where it lays on the original placement. Then remove the emblem, paint it and re apply to your car with some 3M double sided tape using the template you made before removal.

If you want to try painting an emblem while its still on to just give it a shot... go for the front Jeep logo on the hood, the angle is nice and easy to manage. OBXJeep has a pretty good thread on here about how to paint your front Jeep logo black.

Good luck

Thanks man! I was also thinking of taking an exacto knife and just going around the edges of the emblem to cut where any of the plastidip and painters tape would meet?

Im not sure if this will work but we will see come warmer weather lol

Yah you can try that, it works but i have kind of shakey hands and i was fearful of getting any kind of cut in the paint... it does help though

Cool man, thanks for the advice. I hope you get your 4x4 emblem back on!
