Anyone know when 2012 production starts?

I just realized I've got a decent amount of equity in my 2008 overland, which is coming off lease soon. I may just buy it and wait for the 2012s depending on how long the wait will be. Anyone got any good info?

Next model year production is usually sometime in the summer. Since no major changes have yet been announced, I don't see any reason why they'd rush them into production. Most speculation on changes revolves around transmissions with an 8 speed coming eventually, but I think that's looking to be more of a 2013 thing.

According to the WK2Jeeps site the 2012 model production will start in July of 2011

I've read July 18th (coincides with SRT8 production launch date)... take it with a grain of salt though.

Long way away when you factor in production time. Don't think I can wait that long!

only way i'd wait that long is if one of our insiders (hint, hint) could confirm that 2012 model year would have the 8-speed transmissions. based on the link below they are saying they won't be available until 2013 MY but Motor Trend was speculating 2012 for the Dodge Charger in this month's issue.

Best guesses I've seen for the new transmissions are MY2013; I don't expect many changes, if any, for 2012. Maybe some minor under the skin stuff to fix a few things they've learned since production began, but that's about all I'd expect.

If you were hoping for some major change for the '12s, I'd say there's not much chance of that. If you like your current GC and want the 8 speed tranny in the new one, go ahead and buy yours and then drive it another year and a half. Otherwise, may as well make the plunge now.

Besides the WK2Jeeps.com site updated by Milous, there is also this Wheels.com site for production dates of all manufacturers. No info yet about the 2012 GC:

In a thread a while back Milous was saying 2012 for the 8-speed box, then later he said maybe 2013... haven't heard anything lately though.
It would be nice to know cause the only reason i'm waiting for 2012 is for the 8-speed box, if Milous said it'll be 2013 for sure, then I'd be ordering a 2011 overland now.
Any updates would be great!

2012 SRT8 is rumored to have the 8speed. I think all other models will stick with what they currently have for another year.

I was going to wait another year on the SRT but not knowing it's configuration I decided to do the Overland now and in 18 - 24 months, if the SRT has what I want it to have (450+ hp, QLII, 7000 lb towing) then I'll simply trade out or sell the '11 for a '13. Sure, it's not the financially prudent way of doing things but cars are money pits anyway so if it costs me maybe a few thousand in depreciation over 2 years, no biggie. The SUV I had before the WK2 was depreciating too, might as well have the new car while I wait on the SRT (or whatever else someone else comes out with over time).

However, if you're one that keeps a car for 5+ years then perhaps waiting until you see what 2012 brings (and buy a leftover 2011 if it's not much) is probably a better plan. The longest I've ever kept a primary vehicle is 3 years and I've been buying new cars since 1976.

It's been awhile, but there was once official talk at Jeep/Dodge of possibly having an interim replacement box for MY 2012 with 6 speeds until the 8-speed ZF could be brought into full production. Haven't heard this option mentioned in some months, tho.

The new Explorer's faster off-the-line numbers might nudge Jeep in this direction. However, Chrysler has so many irons in the fire just now that they may just leave the GC pretty much as is while they concentrate their available resources on overhauling the entire line of makes/models.
