my first "recovery"

Tried to go up a trail with a couple of friends over the weekend.. couldn't make it to the top as there was snow and underneath the snow was ice. Lots of ruts and whoop-dee-doos on this trail! I was proud of my Overland being able to keep up with a Wrangler and FJ Cruiser.. I even helped recover one.. lol. New tires definitely helped. I don't think I would've made it as far if I was running the stock tires

And here's a video of me pulling out the FJ

http://vimeo.com/18882900

If you look at the other two videos, they're both of us recovering the Wrangler.. fun times!

Nice job on the FJ rescue, Anh.

What is best practice for recovery ops (on either end of the towstrap)?

Type of strap (any recommendations?)

Method of attachment at both ends (hook-to-eye or hook-to-hitchball, or looping around each?)

Driving tips when under tension.

Other safety considerations that might not be obvious? I noticed you had your liftgate open. My first thought was that this was to save your rear window in case of towstrap failure, but I didn't see you wearing a helmet so I disregarded that theory.

I have a first aid/safety kit that has a yellow nylon braided towstrap and I would like to know how to use it safely in case I'm ever in position to do a recovery. I would also like to know if I should throw it away and replace it with a webbed material or some other type of strap(s). Any input welcomed. Would also enjoy seeing more recovery videos.

I'll admit that I'm no expert when it comes to off-road recovery techniques.. as a matter of fact, far from it. But, I'll tell you what I used-- I put in a receiver hitch d-ring, rated up to 10,000 lbs. I also used a recovery tow strap, rated up to 10,000 lbs. Someone did mention to me NOT to get recovery straps with metal/hooks because if it snaps, you're going to have a heavy piece of metal flying around. I don't know about "yanking" a vehicle so we didn't do any of that.. just slow and gradual pulls.

My lift gate was up, but I closed it before pulling the FJ. Don't get me wrong, that FJ is an incredibly capable vehicle

On Jeep Jamborees they would hand out Mark Smith's (http://www.ormhof.com/inductees/Mark-Smith.htm) Guide to Off Roading, which covers many topics including tow strap use.
