Good read...On top of that most engines hold more oil now days than in the past. For example the V8 Hemi's hold 7 quarts and in the past most V8's held only 5 quarts. The more oil in reserve helps the oil last longer keeps it a little cooler etc...

I've stopped doing that for years. My previous Jeep had oil changes every 10,000 km with synthetic. With this new Jeep, I plan to only go in only when it tells me to.

Many manufacturers are going to oil change intervals based on driving habits and oil analysis as determined by onboard electronics.

(Interestingly, the first oil change on one of my other cars is 20,000 miles or 2 years as listed by the owners manual.)

In the past, I've done my vehicles every 5K miles. With this thing, I had my first one at 6K, but from here on out they will be when the thing tells me it wants one.

Oil has gone way up in price as the price of crude has risen; you used to be able to get a quart of a quality name brand oil for a dollar. Now, it's closer to $3-4, and you're better off keeping an eye out for a good "oil change special" to save a few more bucks.

yup changing oil every 3K is nothing more than a waste of oil and money, but some people will still keep doing 3K. As for myself I will do it when the car tells me to or by the manual.

I just changed the oil in my wife's '05 Liberty after only 589 miles (six months since last change). I change hers every six months regardless of the mileage. The oil change reminder on her EVIC is calculated by miles only and is set to warn at 3,000.

What is Jeep recommending for the new Overlands? Or when does the Overland start telling you to change?

Guess alot depends on comfort level, my wife's A4 says 10K, but I change at about 6K as it starts burning oil, 150K miles on the clock.

My 06 Mustang GT doesn't get driven alot, but the aftermarket intake seems to pull alot of crap in so I change it at 4K and the filter/oil looks pretty dirty.

Both using Mobile 1 synthetic.

Good article. I have been 7,500 mile changes since 1995. Dateline did a story was back using NYC taxi's showing no need to change any sooner as long as the oil was ASE certified.

Version 4 of the owner’s manual says 8,000 miles or Six months whichever comes first. I think many people to include myself are focused on the mileage and not the time. In this case must mean something as the maintenance schedule has six month intervals along with mileage.

That didn't have anything to do with OnStar..it is a GM system. My non-OnStar Vette did the same thing. Supposedly based on cold starts, RPMs, etc.
