V6 Towing Questions

OK - Embarrassing, but have to set the tone for towing capability question.

Current Situation: I am towing a 17', 3800 lb GVWR recreational Hybrid trailer (a full height RV with ends that fold out like a tent trailer for those that don't know) with a 2006 3.8L V6 Kia Sedona MINIVAN - Yes, you heard it here - MINIVAN  I have been pulling it this way for about 4 years, and it has actually been a good experience. No problems driving through the Rockies with some long Mountain passes (Rogers Pass in the Canadian BC Rockies). The max towing on the Van is 3500 lbs, so I keep the trailer under that weight and am very cautious with how much stuff I pack into the vehicle. Coming up to 5 years with this vehicle, and am getting VERY interested in the 2011 WK2 Overland - fully loaded with the off-road package. Most of my camping/fishing is in the Rockies Back Country, and how far off-road I can go is obviously very limited with my current setup. I have been towing trailers for 20+ years and my cureent Van/Hybrid combo tows as well on the Hi-way as my 2000 3/4 Ton Silverado 6L/ 8500 lb 28' 5th Wheel combo did (Judging on pulling up the same hills).

Question 1: I doubt that I would ever have a trailer that would weigh more that 4500 lbs GVWR, so am thinking that the new V6 should be adequate for my purposes with the 5000 lb towing capacity. I have test driven one, and would say that it seems a bit more "Peppy" than my Van, but not a tremendous amount so. My concern comes from seeing some posts that seem to indicate that the V6 configuration is a bit generous in stating 5000 lbs, with some feeling it would be more accurate to be rated at 3000 lbs. So the bottom line is, do any current owners feel that the V6 configuration towing 4500 lbs and the vehicle filled with gear (not going over the specified GCVW) and passengers is an issue? I know the sure fix would be to get the V8, but I would rather not if possible, as 70% of my driving is in the city.

Question 2: Does the load-levelling shock system mean you no longer require an equalizer setup on the trailer as I currently obviously require?

Thanks in advance for all that take the time to reply, and here's hoping I will soon be back in the truck world!

Re: V6 Towing Questions

The obvious question I would ask Jeep is how they reconcile the 8900 GCWR with a vehicle that weighs 4850 lbs without any passengers and gear with a 5000 lb tow rating?

8900 - 4850 = 4050

So, you add 2 people and their gear, ~500 lbs and you have a real trailer capacity of 3550. If you load the vehicle to it's ~1150lb rating and you end up with a 2900 lb max trailer weight.

IMHO, unless they screwed up the GCWR, if you are towing you need the V8.

i just finished my several week long conversation with Chrysler customer support on GCWR topic. Final statement from them is 8900 is mistake in documentation, they will have it updated that to 10400 lbs which is actual rating.

That's more like it. with a lightly loaded vehicle you could get to the 5000lb rating

10400 - 4850 (published weight) = 5550 lbs. Take away 550 lbs for fuel, people and luggage you are at 5000.

Cool, thanks for doing all the legwork.

If you were comfortable towing with the Kia Minivan then the 3.6 Pentastar should be fine for your purposes.

Make sure you get one of these hitch attachments.

Wow, - yes, Thank you very much for the time you spent with Chrysler vitk, and for the math mjw! Makes me much more confident.

Xmonger, can you send me a link to the hitch attachment, - gotta get one. I'm sure my wife won't notice :) Thanks for your opinion comparing the towing to the KIa.

Any other thoughts on this?
