Looking to buy a 4x4 Overland, v6 or HEMI

I might be knit pick'n but I'm crunching numbers.

So, my buddy, former Chrysler employee who owns a 2008 JGC HEMI and now an employee at another manufacture employee claims:

1. 3 years difference (residual) via Chrysler in a v6 vs v8 is $1000

So, if the option is (~1800) + gas difference(625 * 3 years = $975) / 36 months, I'm roughly coming out to an extra $102/month - 28/month (residual) = $74/month to get the Hemi over the v6.

Does, this sound about right?

I'm in Metro Atlanta, and will mostly be considered a DD in traffic, and I'm wavering b/t the 2, no major towing, not big hills, but I own a v8 mustang and maybe reluctant to more MPG vs more power, but with regional sales cost vs resale, I may be ok. However, this will be my wifes car, and I may drive 5% of the time.

2. My buddy said 80% over Overland purchases, 'TAKE', i.e. buy the v8. So in resale would that be comparable in your area?

Throw out maintenance in plugs/oil/etc. I'm not considering that

well, it all depends where the GAS prices will be when you want to sell the car.

- Price
- gas for 3 Years
- higher service cost for the V8

vs. more fun ;-)

My 2 cents says that the V8 would return a better resale value than the V6 but then again I can be wrong.

on previous gen Grands(wj and wk) the V8's would have a lot better resale values becasue of the pacages available with the V6 and V8's...especially the WK. All V8's were limited/Overland luxury models....therefore had the most options. they did offer the limited package with a V6 later on....but those are prolly pretty rare. I see a V6 loaded Overland holding its value with a V8 loaded Overland very well....prolly pretty even.

Scott's right - you can't compare the previous generations directly because this is the first time you could get a V-6 with the upper trim levels. Furthermore, this V-6 isn't as anemic as those in years past. We just won't know until we get a few years down the road.

The only wild card in the deck is that with the Overland or a Trail Rated package, the V-8 gives the Quadra-Drive system, so if somebody is buying a used GC for off roading, the V-8 will be more attractive to them.

IMO, your wife should drive both powertrains and see what she thinks. Many of us with the V-6 did just that and found the V-6 to be plenty sufficient; the extra oomph of the V-8 was either not noticeable in the test drive or didn't offset either the added initial cost or the double fuel hit (reduced efficiency and higher grade of gas required). Others have driven both and decided to opt for the V-8.

I agree with what you say. I (and my wiffe) drove both many times. For me I needed the extra power of the 5.7 because of the mountains in Western NC. That was the main reason we got a new SUV. My old Nitro with the 3.7 was not so good around here. Plenty on flat roads. If you dont need to tow heavy loads and live in a flat area the v6 is fine.

I was going to originally say get the V8 for sure, but then you said its your wifes car...no brainer get her the V6. If your into performance (which you seem to be since you have a stang GT) you would have MUCh more fun driving the V8 Overland. I would get too bored with the V6 and since this new Overland is going to be my only car I want to be able to enjoy every bit of it. Neither the V6 or V8 do excellent on fuel so as far as that goes its a crap shoot.
If it was yours for the bad ass and fun factor I would say V8 all day long. Since its your wifes get the cheaper V6.

We got the V6 because it was smooth and makes sophisticated sounds when revved to it's 6500 rpm redline (which is often because max HP is at 6400 RPM) Anyway, in most situations I have really enjoyed the V6, cheaper maintenance and gas mileage is much better than my previously Hemi powered WK 14mpg for the V6 vs 10 mpg for the Hemi in the city. I drove both Hemi and V6 WK2 several times and the Hemi felt heavier and less balanced in the turns than the V6 because of all that weight in the front end. If i towed every weekend, I would have gone with the Hemi. But Most of my driving is in Boston traffic and having the more lithe feel of the V6 swayed me. Gas prices are only going to go up so I thought the V6 was a wiser choice for the future. I remember when I tried to get rid of my WJ 4.7 Overland in 2008 and nobody wanted it :(

Hmmm - not sure that's true. As I understand it, the Quad-Drive's main advantage over QTII is the ELSD. That's a potential advantage in higher-speed traction situations, but it's of no use in low-speed off-road use where you typically lock up the differentials.

I'm open to correction here by those with more knowledge.

Thanks for all your input, the v6 seems more practical, I guess it's just the fact I have the v8 in my car that makes me second guess my choice.

On a side note, I thought the Overland (non-trail rated) came standard with the Quadra Trac-II, not the Quadra Drive II?

The V-6 Overland is QTII. On other trim levels, non-trail rated V-8 models are QTII. But on the Overland, if you get the Hemi, it is QDII whether you get the Off Road Adventure II package or not (or at least it has been, but I don't think this has changed).

Thx, didn't know that, though explains a sticker I was looking at online (non-detail). What's the cost difference bt QTII and QDII on Laredo's?
