replace gear shift knob

How do you remove the gear shift knob on a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I want to replace it with an all chrome knob. Does it pop off, screw off and do you need tools or can you do it by hand.

With a plastic putty knife or trim stick separate the trim ring from the shift knob (pry it downward). You'll see a yellow spring clip on the back of the shifter right below the knob, grab the spring clip tab with a pair of pliers and pull it out. You can now lift the shift knob up to remove it.

Just curious: What does the chrome shift knob look like? A hyperlink will work.

its very easy to replace. You dont even need a trim stick. The chrome ring can just be pulled down with your hands. there is a yellow or black retainer clip that needs to be pulled out with pliers. super easy. then simply slide on the mopar shifter and tighten the set srew. I did this in less than 5 minutes.
I love the feel of the T handle and the fact that i can rest my hand on the thing while driving. Very comfortable.

i just twisted the chrome with my hands and pulled up on the knob and it came off very easily.

A few minor heads up pointers.

I twisted my OEM lockring a bit too hard and broke a small plastic tab off the internals of the lockring. It was no big deal as the replacement SRT8 knob stays on permanently in this case.

I also had to enlargen the SRT8 knob shaft opening a slight amount with a drill bit to get the new lock collar on properly.

Either way, nice upgrade so long as you don't do one of those faux grenade knobs or an 8 ball.

good point. You dont need to twist the chrome piece at all.. it just pulls down. the mopar shifter required no mods. just slid on nice and snug.

Here's the 2009 SRT8 knob photo and thread link. Just for Jeeps has this and the more expensive version with the rivets, which is really sharp. Billet Technology has a few as well.
