HELP: New Jeep owner - warranty or no? DIESEL

Hey everyone,

I am new to the forums. I just bought a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0L diesel 4x4 (pix to come). It is cherry... and has only 28k miles on it. Here is my dilemma...

I can buy a Jeep factory warranty for my ride. However... powertrain is $1900, and full warranty is $2700. They last until 70k miles or the beginning of 2014...whichever comes first.

Would you guys buy...or should I trust that the Mercedes Diesel will hold up?

Thanks again... looking forward to modding this thing out.

I have the same Jeep, bought it with 45,000 and now have 50,000 miles. No problems to date and I have modded it out with grill, 3 " lift and 265 tires with black offset rims. I am from Canada and they sold alot of diesels in 2006-2009, More private shops and mechanics are trained on them.

first off, i chose to roll the dice and get no warrenty seeing as I have like 3 mechanic friends who told me the engine was reliable. I also knew the vehicle had 1 owner and had some service records. The jeep also spent 6 months at a dealer and was somewhat pampered here and used by the owner.

You might want to get the warrenty if your not a handy man or have no mechancis as friends, my buddies have code readers ( not that I have had to use it!) which can help me diagnose the problems in the future.

As for mods, my milage dropped from 20-24 mpg to 16-19 mpg with the bigger tires. The truck looks awesome and I get looks from alot of other jeeps and pickups....... worth the drop in MPG and it is better offroad.

A hemi jeep with the same mods would be down to 12-14 mpg I would think?

Good luck.

That's def good to know. I am handy... but have ZERO mechanic friends that work on Jeeps. The record on this thing is pretty immaculate, and I know the Mercedes Diesel has a great rep, but I'm just freaked out but I'm just freaked out after spending decent money on my rig.

The guy who sold it to me actually had just put new tires on it before he put it on the market. They are also 265 Blizzaks, and yes... my mileage is around what you are getting. 19-20mpg. I was planning on getting a set of non-winter wheels and tires. prob some black SRT-8 rims with all seasons on there. You think they will negatively affect my mielage as much as these 265s?

DRop down to 255's if you want better milage, if the SRT rim is offset a bit, it will still look good.

I bought the extended warranty at time of purchase and it has more than paid for itself. These 3.0L are expensive when they need parts as dayne66 has already told you.

Also, the extended warranty I bought included 10 free oil changes. An dealer oil change on the 3.0L can cost $200-$300, so again, it was worth it to me.
