I have a late 2006 overland. The rear bootlid under the glass is starting to 'bubble' and rust. It also has rust spots appearing on the bottom edge and a blister near the rear number plate! as it is only 4 1/2 years old I have taken it to the local dealer, they have photographed it and a warranty claim is going in. I have been told by the dealer not to expect Jeep to sort it out but they will give the claim a go.
Has anybody else had any similar problem with the rear of their truck and if so did it Jeep fix it under warranty?
Ive noticed the only rusting on the exterior painted surface of my wk in the same location as yourself, under the decklid glass. I've sanded to metal and repainted with some auto store touch up type paint. I am now careful to open the glass and handwash/dry and wax the area whenever I wash the vehicle.
I did not waste my time dealing with warranty claims, most likely you will be told that your exterior rust was a result of a rock chip that was left untreated.
I have had the exact same problem, and have just learned to reapply touch up paint every so often if the paint appears to be worn off. Another trick that I learned from someone was to put electrical tape in that area, so the window will rub the tape instead. It seems to work, but you have to change the tape every so often, and it may be noticeable on a light colored jeep.
Does anyone know if the hinges on the glass are adjustable? I always forget to look into that, but if you could adjust the glass upwards a hair, I believe that would solve the problem, since the glass is too close to the bottom. If anything, maybe jeep should issue a recall or sell a different hinge if the ones on there are not adjustable.
I havent noticed any rubbing personally, it just seems that the area is prone to collecting stagnant water/dirt/salt. I haven't looked at the hinges tho.
My glass used to rattle on bumps, so I adjusted the latch inwards slightly to hold it tighter. I heard from a friend who does body work though that it is a somewhat common issue on SUV's with a rear glass like that.
It must be a problem that Jeep are aware of! It doesn't make you want to buy another one! I am still awaiting the call from the dealer. Also had tyre pressure sensor snap when putting in more air. Quality of parts is shocking. Jeep you should be ashamed.
I have a 2006 CRD overland and have had rust spots on the lip just under the rear lift glass and on the edge of the chrome strip above the number plate.
I contacted my dealer and they said the rust spots under the rear glass were covered under warranty as they were caused by a defect in the paintwork. The rust at the corner of the chrome strip would not be covered as it was due to the chrome strip rubbing on the paintwork.
They repainted my tailagte and did the rust around the number plate at the same time as a goodwill gesture. All done under the 6 year paintwork warranty.
If yours is bubbling up from under the paint then it should definitely be a warranty job.
My dealer said it was a fairly common fault and they have done others before.
They did also say that if it had of been just the rust around the number plate then it would not of been covered.
I'm giving our 2006 a thorough investigation this weekend after reading this thread. When I detail, I wax inside door jambs and inside the area under the glass and hatch so hopefully I'm okay...
I was getting the beginning signs of this on my 05 but no rust just worn paint. To my luck, you could say, i got in to a car accident not of my own fault and to blend the paint they sanded and re painted the entire lift gate so its perfect again.
i also had slight rust at the corners of the lift gate handle at each end. That is also fixed now.
Today I phoned the Jeep dealership as they themselves did not phone as promised, they have refused to cover the issue under the warranty as i cannot prove if it is rusting from the inside out or the outside in!! Have contacted the customer care dept. to raise the issue. I now have to wait at least 25hrs for the result.
Very angry!!!!!!!!!!!
Russ,
I'm in King's Lynn Norfolk the main dealer is Marshalls Peterborough.
did you have a reference number i could quote?
My next step if they refuse will be trading standards.
I need it fixed as I intend to sell it.
cheers Andy
Not to far away from you then, I'm in Lincolnshire near Boston.
I used the dealer where I bought it from in North Yorkshire John Gill. (used to live near there)
They didn't give me any reference number, just quick look at it took some photos and booked me in.
I think they are trusted to self cert some warranty work without prior authorisation from Jeep.
I have just ordered some parts to complete a transmission fluid change from Marshalls, dipstick tool, oil, gasket and filter so hopefully that will go ok.
Same problem 2007 WH CRD, chrysler doesn't warrent the claim, its standing water under the liftgate which is actually a design flaw..., goodwill from my dealer gave my a touch up paintjob, didn't last long, within 6 months the rusting started again(even with loads of wax on it :-( ), ......... build quality????
faulty paintwork? or am i just being unreasonable.
i didnt buy it from the main dealer it was a private sale, so i can understand them not wanting to know, but jeep should be sorting it.
A few of the photos i have taken, what do you think??
Apologies photo are so big, not sure how to make them smaller
The rust spots next to the rear window rubber are in the same place as mine were.
They look as if they're bubbling up from underneath and some of the paint hasn't even broken yet! I can't see how they can refuse your claim.
The other rust spots look like they could be due to damaged paint and it may be hard to prove faulty paintwork as the cause.
thanks for the photos, I had assumed the rust was caused by the glass rubbing through the paint, but it doesn't look like the rust is caused by being scuffed away, looks like its coming up from underneath.
Well surprise, surprise Jeep are keeping up their dreadful customer service by not calling me back when they say they will.
The sooner it is sorted out the sooner it can be sold and I will never have to deal with them again. I just hope other Jeep owners are getting better treatment.
Lovely car, s**t backup!
I checked my area and noticed the scuffing caused by the rear glass. I think the issue is that the rubber gasket is to soft. I intend on inserting a foam piece to make the gasket firmer and not allowing the glass to rub, I can post some pics if you guys want.
Finally a result from Jeep.
Warranty claim denied!!!!!!!!
the warranty is only valid when the panel is perforated.
I have what they call 'COSMETIC CORROSION' which is not covered.
Can anybody tell me what COSMETIC CORROSION is because I am at a loss.
Again Jeep you should be ashamed!
I will look forward to reading their next brochure to see if cosmectic corrosion is an optional extra!
