Re: Rust

What I would suggest if you really don't want the rust appearing again it so sand the axle. Yes, Sand it. It's very Time consuming. Sand it and get some thick Black Undercoat Spray and give it a maybe 3-4 Coats. You can buy it from Advanced Auto Parts. You can get everything for under $25.

If you can, it would be very easy and less strain on your back if you can jack up the rear and get some Jack Stands to hold it up. Don't only rely on the Tire Jack please!

Re: Rust

Some POR15 will work on the axle and non painted surfaces of the body. No prep, just paint it on and go.

This stuff is amazing. I still have a glob of dried up POR15 on my garage floor...looks like the day I spilled it! Hehehe...I've used it as an undercoat, simply awesome product.

I had rust all over my rear axle and diff when I bought my 06 used in April 2010. I lightly brushed off the entire surface with a stiff bristle brush and then went over it with Rustoleum Rust Reformer. Did two light coats. I've gone wheeling in mud and through water since then and it still looks great.

I used a rust reformer also. Just take some steel wool or a wire brush to remove any rust and you can brush this stuff on. Great thing about it is it dries to black and make the underside look much better. You can pick up from an autozone or some place like that for about 10 bucks.
