Clicking noise from one of the wheel areas on my 2002 Overland.

So, I'm taking an offramp the other day, going around a gentle corner, when I start to hear a clicking noise. Seems to be coming from the passenger rear wheel. When I stepped on the brake I thought the noise stopped. Seems to only happen when taking a right hand turn. No issues on straight lines.

I thought (hoped) I might just have road slush/ice built up and something was rubbing. Don't think so after visual inspection. Took it to a car wash and parked in the bay where you can spray the jet nozzle yourself and sprayed all up inside the passenger wheel wells. Clicking is still there. Not loud and can't "feel it" in the seat as I drive or in the steering wheel.

Thoughts? Axle? Expensive???

As you said it seemed that the noise went away when braking, so i would start from there. Remove the rear wheels one by one and check the brake discs, calipers and pads for loose parts or something abnormal. Also turn the wheels and feel for any abnormal play. The bad thing with noises is that you can swear that they come from a certain direction, but that finally the source could be from a completely different place, due to the mechanical transfer of the vibration which causes the noise. But you have to start somewhere and sometimes its just a game of eliminating certain possibilities to reach the real problem.

I had a ticking that I only heard when I turned.

Turns out it had nothing to do with the "turning" and everything to do with the direction the sound was going. A rock in my tire was all it was. Popped it out, tick is gone.

Hey, it's the easiest thing to check!

I'd love it if it was just a pebble in the tire; but me thinks it's more than that. Will dig further and update you guys. Thanks!

Haha, yes, the chicken is quite funny isn´t it. Frango is the Portuguese name for chicken and chicken (from the cartoon Cow and Chicken) was and still is one of my favorites. I started with the name Frango ( also a compilation of my name and my wifes name, Frank and Goretti) when i had to choose my first internet address. Lateron i found this picture of the "self content" and "héééé, i just woke up, leave me alone" little chicken, and it was love at first sight.:D

Great story. Thanks again for helping out. I may have found the source of my problem/noise, but, I now need to go buy a big enough floor jack to lift up each wheel... In the rear, the discs have a plastic "boot" encasing them and I wonder if there's some chum in there. ??? Gotta get the Jeep up and get the wheels off one by one and investigate further.

Don´t know if you are going to do more maintenance tasks yourself, otherwise you could use the onboard jack and use some stands after the jacking, to work safely.

Problem solved my brothers. The 'heat shield' thing that runs the length of the exhaust under the cabin of the truck had come free. (Crappy washers that rust away ...in my humble oppinion). The shield would move over and rub against the drive shaft when I went around corners. Fabricated some new big butt washers, layed on the ice for 45 minutes and fixed the prob. Yeah baby!
