Faulty catalytic convertors

I am new to this forum,and I have found it very interesting.I have a 4.7
H O v8.My error code indicates My left cat is faulty.I dont need this because we dont get tested for emmission controls( South Africa)
How can I safely remove it ,without damaging the engine,or the engine goes into limp mode?Your inputs will be much appreciated!

Thanks

You never mentioned your year or the Model. If it is these below:
This product fits the following Jeep Grand Cherokee submodels
  • 2004-2004: Special Edition; 8 Cyl 4.7L;
  • 2002-2004: Laredo; 8 Cyl 4.7L;
  • 2002-2004: Limited; 8 Cyl 4.7L;
  • 2002-2004: Overland; 8 Cyl 4.7L;
  • 2002-2002: Sport; 8 Cyl 4.7L;
Is this the piece you are looking for?

This just went bad on my WJ and going to have to purchase one - and probably get 4 new O2 Sensors as well (which is suggested when repalcing this part).

You can find this part below at
$348.79 - http://www.rockauto.com/dbphp/x,cata...ers_20393.html

Thanks Grant B,
This is exactly what i am looking for.I have a 2005 wj 4.7 ho.
What if i cut out the cats and replace it with a straight pipe.I suppose I will still have the "engine" light on the dash ,and thats all? or will it go into limp mode or something?

Re: Faulty catalytic convertors

if you remove the cats you should be fine except for the CEL.

NO LIMP MODE.

What he said. While at the Indy 500 one year, someone stole the cat from my buddies 2001 WJ. He has yet to replace it (only CEL).

I would recommend you weld in a pipe to replace them. If not, it'll be much louder than it was. Even w/ the pipe in place, it'll be louder (but at least it'll still use the muffler).

Maybe this is just me...

But if you dont resolve the problem and the CEL stays on, how will you be notified when you have the next issue (since the CEL is already on)...

But like I said - maybe that is just me and how i think :D

Thats why i am saving up to drop the 400 to get a replacement to make the CEL go off.

I'm not sure how it works on these Jeeps but I do know how it works on my Mustang. For that, there are two options here. The first option is that you can buy a hand held tuner and turn off the rear O2 sensors. The second option is that you can buy "MIL Eliminators" and put them in place of the rear O2 sensors. The MIL Eliminators fake a good signal from the rear sensors. You might look into these options for the Jeep.

The rear O2 sensors do nothing to the engine and A/F ratio. They are simply there to tell you if your cats are bad.

In other words:if i cut out both cats and replace them with either a small muffler or a straight pipe ,i must get two mini cat convertors,so the onboard computor will think there are cats installed?
If there are any error codes in the future,i will be able to see it?
Thanks guys

No, you don't get mini cats. You get a tuner to turn off your rear sensors or an electronic device to fake a good signal from the rear sensors. Or live with the CEL always being on.
