Caliber SRT4

:thumbsup:So over the past couple of weeks i've been searching for a car for my girlfriend. She wanted to spend around $20,000 - $25,000. My first recomendation was something AWD (we get a lot of snow). The only thing that she really wanted was a MT with heated seats. So we started looking, the Juke would have been out of her price range for the AWD version, She really likes the Mazda 3 but after taking one out for a test drive we both found them very floaty and gutless.

I was looking around on Autotrader the other day and saw a nice Caliber SRT4 that was very well priced. I always assumed they were more than they really are. So we did a little looking and found a nice 2009 black 6MT with 20,000kms for $20,995, It also has a couple of mods (intake, BOV, Catback dual exhaust 4" tips, LED tails, Apexi turbo timer, strut brace.) Today we went and test drove it... HOLY SH!T that is a very FUN car, My gf was a little nervous to drive it first because she read that the SRT has a performance clutch and was tricky to get used to SO I drove it first. I found it surprisingly solid and heavy feeling, the steering was nice and tight, shifting was solid and very short throw.

2 issues with the car, 1.) it doesn't have heated seats. 2.) it has a stain on the a-pillar which scared me because I have had tons of problems with my jeep sunroof drain tubes, mine leaks like a siv!

She would be trading in a 2001 Tiburon, they're not worth much, couple thousand at most. long story short we could finance it for $380 CAD per month.

So I guess my questions to you guys are, Do you think it's a good buy? is there any major issues that we should know of? anything I should be asking for as far as the stain issue on the headliner?

Thanks guys!

Alright, Assuming its the drain tube issue like the jeeps, would a replacement headliner be out of the question? it's still under warranty.

One thing some people might not know about the engine in the SRT4 series cars.

Unlike other developments, when a company tries to accomplish the most for the least cost, the 2.4L in the SRT vehicles was literally designed and built sparing no expense whatsoever. The best of everything was thrown into the mix, regardless of cost. I remember reading the initial engineering reviews from independent sources saying no better turbo 4 cylinder could be designed and built(at the time).

Ill just say, Ive been around cars my whole life, Ive raced a bunch, driven cars upwards of 800+hp on the street, and some more than double that on the track, AND I must say these things are fast on the highway. Ran into a few and just toying around they tend to disappear in a hurry. Drove my buddies stage 3 SRT4 and its probably one of the fastest cars from a 60 roll ive been in, granted he's making like 500whp but yeah they're cool little cars, def performers :)

Stuff that, I'd get a Turbo Forrester!

And I'll add (FWIW), that any little car thats had those mods done has been flogged half to death by some young pimple faced dweeb ;)

I like the Forrester, but unless something has changed, the last I looked, the USA only got the naturally aspirated one. Of course I've been out of the country for a while.

I'd have to search for the link again, but I found a "consumer reports" style organization that searches for and acquires unmodded SRT4s for potential buyers.

Took the words right out of my mouth... There is so much trash out there and its unfourtunate but true that some people will end up with a mess no matter how much they do to prevent it (proper inspection and good testdrive).

There are some things that just shy me away from a car no matter how good of a deal, A big one is a laundry list of bolt-ons that were done in the apartment parking lot. As stated it tells you the car has been beaten on. Not to mention how and why is it being sold? Was it a repo? Can the owner not afford it anymore? All good signs that the car has not only been flogged on but not been maintained (if they cannot afford the car payment they sure as hell cannot afford the oil changes).

I am a picky buyer... unless the price is boarderline free compaired to the value of the car (like my grand that I have 3k into), I dont buy it unless its THE ONE. Especially since your girl has wheels, I would consider using this logic, be patient, and you will find the one!

Yeah she didnt buy the SRT. She bought a 2011 Mazda 3 GT she found the exact car she wanted for a great deal, couldn't pass it up. White sport wagon, black leather, 6MT.

I thought you said Mazda 3s were floaty and gutless. Why'd your girlfriend settle?
