Anybody know ETA on Thule or Yakima Racks?

Looking to purchase a rack capable of mounting 2 flat bottom kayaks.

Re: Anybody know ETA on Thule or Yakima Racks?

I asked both of them about when cross bars for the WK2 would be available.

Response from Yakima on 2/2/11

The side rails on the new Grand Cherokee are incompatible with our current systems. We may have something available in the future, but we have no plans at this time to create the adapter for that car.

Response from Thule on 1/25/11

March 1st. we will have the following system available.

460 podium foot pack x1
Lb58 cross bars x1
fit kit 4019 x1
544 lock cylinder set x1

Thanks for the reply Jay. Do you have any experience with either brand? If so, do you have a preference? Pros/ Cons?

I had a Thule rack on a previous car, and I have a Yakima cargo carrier now. I don't really have a preference or pros/cons. The only thing I can say is Thule seemed more friendly about answering my question on the cross bars for the WK2.

I have a thule 4 bike, bike rack and love it. Great quality, I have only owned it since September but its been great thus far. Its also not the ~100 dollar 4 bike it was 300+, so Im not sure if price matters with thule but I like all the features I have for the bike rack.

I thought you could configure a Yakima rack set on their website for the WK2...it gave me a bunch of options. Is that all incorrect?

I think in order to fit a Yakima rack, you need to replace the factory rails. If you want to keep the factory rails and just buy Yakima cross bars, they don't have anything that fits.

I currently have the Thule podium system on my 2008 Commander using the Aero bars and the only thing keeping it from being usable on the 2011 GC is the 4019 fit kit which is available from almost all of the rack distributors on the net, or so it shows up on a search that way. The 460 podium is the same along with the cylinder lock kit. The Aero bars are different from the above part number but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Several of us have installed Yakima ski racks on the Mopar cross rails using Yakima universal clamps. The result is solid. Here's my take on it with pics:

The clamp hardware may be different for kayak carriers but the info above may provide some confidence that it can be done-- or may shoot the idea out of the water. Hope it helps.

I grew tired of waiting for Yakima also. I emailed them months ago and got a one sentence reply stating they are not working on landing pads for my control towers. Poor customer service.

Anyway, I went to Rack Attack, as others have done, and had them pull off the Jeep factory rails. They installed new longer rails and I was able to use my Yakima junk again. If I ever want to add a skybox, I can now reposition my control towers forward enough so the back of the box isn't hanging over the liftgate, as it would be with the case with the OEM rails.

I'm happy to hear that Thule has a compatible sysytem. I've used both Yakima and Thule and think Thule is better quality and more user friendly.

Can someone post a picture of a rack setup with a fairing? I want to see if it looks g-a-y.
