one Range Rover Or two Grand Cherokees?

A nice comparison of the Grand Cherokee & Range Rover from over the pond.

I just sold my Land Rover LR3 and bought a GC Overland. I dont miss the LR3 at all now that the new Overland has gone so upscale. I did go with the 6 cylinder and miss the extra power bit I'm enjoying the better gas mileage and the less expensive non premium gas.

I recall a tv show doing an offroad compare of the LR and the 2010 GC. The LR's better ground clearance and tires won the competition. I'd be interested in seeing the test again with a 2011 GC.

Enjoyable read, seemed pretty fair and objective to me. Would be interested in opinions from other JG'ers who have driven both.

Suggest you park this link in the sticky thread for WK2 reviews. It's a worthy addition to the library, thanks for sharing.

I've driven both (owned an '03 Range, still unsure if I will buy a Grand).

My experience with the Range Rover was mostly terrible. That being said it was a ways ahead of its time. In 2002 no SUV had that combination of luxury and utility.

I really can't see buying one now though. The current Grand is just too good at its price to be ignored, and can do pretty much everything the Range can...although it would be nice if we could get a better engine in the GC.

Re: one Range Rover Or two Grand Cherokees?

I have owned both! Bought a 2005 RR new and I would have to say the Jeep drives better than the RR did. I wanted the proven BMW platform before they switch to the Jaguar based in 2006. I would have to say the RR was great in its time, but now they have appealed to a different demographic and have gone way to chincy. The RR was a lot of maintenance and it had its far share of problems. One I could never get past was 3 transmissions in 60K miles. It ended up being that the jaguar based 2006+ was a lot more reliable than the BMW setup. It did however excel in the stereo and interior luxury realm. The interior on the new WKII is miles ahead of what it was before, but the RR still has it beat. They really put a lot of thought into the inside and nothing was hard to the touch.

All in all I am happy with the Jeep and wouldn't trade it for the current RR. Of course in 2012 or 2013US that could and might all change.

Which model RR did you have?

Re: one Range Rover Or two Grand Cherokees?

My '07 (Jag-based) RR HSE was a big win all around for me...well, except for the bothersome payments. But in just about every other category: looks, performance, ride feel, reliability, space, int/ext fit and finish, appointments, and let's face it-- sheer prestige factor, it was a hit and a compliment machine. It was a bit behind in its MP3/ipod interface (had an AUX jack near the seat warmer controls for the REAR passengers and didn't do BT streaming), and lacked a HDD. Maybe I hit it lucky but I didn't have any chronic problems worth mentioning while I drove it. That rig had a real presence on the road that is unique to RR.

But back to those payments, ouch. I was running it through my business but it was still an obnoxious expense. I didn't think I'd miss the RR but a few months after getting rid of it I started to have some remorse whenever I'd see another one on the road. I was very close to getting another one before I decided to get the WK2 and I am delighted with my decision.

But I'll probably still have another RR someday!

There was only one model in 2005, the HSE.

Re: one Range Rover Or two Grand Cherokees?

We looked at Rovers for years, but always seemed to end up with something else at the last minute. Most recently, we opted for an X5 instead of the LR3, and when the lease just ended on the X5 back in July, we made the jump and leased a new LR4 HSE with the LUX package. It was expensive, but man is it one killer ride! I just picked up my 11 GC Overland yesterday and Love it, but there's something about the ride of the LR4 that the GC does not match. Call it "poise" or "road presence" or I don't know what.....but that thing is hard to beat. We have almost 10K miles on it now, and have only seen one small glitch in the Radio / Nav system were it simply went black and locked up a bit like a computer would. Did that once, but not again. Just shut the vehicle off, and when we restarted it, it seemed to correct itself. We are averaging about 15 MPG in the winter time, and got about 17/18 MPG last summer with it on longer trips. The thing excellerates like a muscle car. (recently car and driver tested it against the competion and it's tested 0-60 time was 6.5 seconds!) Even if you have an 11 GC with a Hemi, you don't want to drag race an LR4 for pink slips anytime soon! I guess you can surmise, I'm pretty happy with it. Having said all that, my new GC is pretty freakin awesome in its own right. It's got the saddle interior which I love, and the wood trim is excellent! For the $18,000.00 price difference, it's a tough sell, but seeing we have both, I'll just consider myself lucky!

Oh, the LR4 ROCKS in the snow. Best vehicle I've ever driven in foul weather. Perhaps because it weighs about a 1000 pounds more then the GC....

Cheers,

Joe

There was an apparent bias in that piece (expected coming from the UK) and I could argue their points but I'll argue the main one.

The only Land Rover you can compare based on price is the LR2. Dollar for dollar the Jeep wins with that match.

The MSRP of this $46.5K vehicle is the winner from the one below. There was no option for a rear DVD and no other 4x4 options (AWD). And of course no V8. Didn't look for skid plates etc.

Model & Engine Price LR2 HSE LUX $41,500.00 Exterior Price Lago Grey - Metallic $950.00 Interior Price Ebony/Ebony Windsor Leather
Dark Chestnut Finisher (wood-effect)
Options Price DVD Navigation system with full color-touch screen $1,900.00 Climate Comfort Package $750.00 HSE LUX Package
Vehicle Subtotal: $45,100.00 Accessories Price 18-inch Alloy Wheel with sparkle finish.
